Follow the instructions below to expedite the advising process:

Advising for Major

  1. Download your transcript from MySSU
  2. Download the Major Advising Check Sheet for your major
  3. Rename the Major Advising Check Sheet to reflect your student ID #, your last name, first name and the term for which you are seeking advising
    • Format: ID_Lastname_Firstname_TermYear.txt
    • Example: 001986_Bear_Shawn_F31.txt
  4. In the Major Advising Check Sheet, edit the document to include your name and contact details where indicated and show all classes you have completed and are in progress.

Use NotePad (Windows) or TextEdit (MacOS) for best results. If you don't remember some of your course’s specific names, you can get your unofficial transcripts from MySSU.
  5. Add any relevant notes or questions within the designated area of the Major Advising Check Sheet.  (ex.  “Can I enroll in Class X and Class Y in the same semester?” or “I completed Class A at a different university, does it qualify as a prerequisite for Class B?”
  6. Do you have a declared minor?
    1. If yes, see Advising for Minor
    2. If No continue to item 7
  7. Prepare your email:
    1. Create an email with the completed Major Advising Check Sheet, named per item 3, as an attachment to your advisor from your school email address
    2. Use the subject: “Registration Advising <TermYear>” (ex. Registration Advising F31). Within the body of area of the email; include your name, student ID #, and any additional information that could aid in advising and attach the checklist document.
    3. Do not send the contents of the advising checklist as body text of the email.
    4. Do not send through Aviso as there can be issues with attachments being sent with the message – primary among them, any attached or embedded files not being included in the email. Send your email as an attachment through your Shawnee @MyMail Email Account using Outlook, web Outlook, or other email client.
  8. When in doubt visit your advisor during their office hours.

Advising for Minor

Advising for a minor is similar to that for a major, though priority of course enrollment is often secondary to that of the major. Some courses may count towards both a major and a minor, but there is often a limit to the number of courses that can apply to both (refer to the specific minor's requirements). Follow these steps when seeking advising for a minor:

  1. Download the appropriate Minor Advising Check Sheet
  2. Update Your Major Advising Check Sheet
    1. Copy and paste the content of the Minor Check Sheet into the bottom of your Major Advising Check Sheet. Only include the content relevant to your declared minor.
    2. At the top of the Major Advising Check Sheet, include the name of the minor in the appropriate "Minor:" field.
  3. Prepare Your Email for Advising:
    1. In the body of your email to the advisor, note that you need advising for your minor (insert minor’s name) along with your major.
    2. Return to Advising for Major Item # 5 and continue
