What is a Resident Assistant?
Being a Resident Assistant at SSU is one of the most prominent and recognizable student leadership jobs on campus.
Getting to work with the Housing and Residence Life team is an excellent opportunity! If you are interested in learning what an RAs is, what it is like to be an RA, or how to become one, then you are in the right place!
As a Resident Assistant you will be in charge of a group of residents in our campus housing. You will be a mentor and friend to them and answer any questions they might have about school or living on campus. RAs also are on-call to assist residents across campus one night every other week and one weekend a month. You will also host events for your residents and be a mediator if any conflict arises. Being a Resident Assistant is a very rewarding job with many perks!
Let’s Hear From SSU RAs:
“Before my collegiate experience I wanted to be an Resident Assistant. I wanted to be a friendly face for people, as well as someone on campus people could rely on. My favorite thing about being an RA is getting to know my residents! We all are so different and I'm thankful for the opportunity to get to know some people I might not have otherwise. I am also a part of the Shawnee Minorities In Gaming club as a chair member, a women's ministry leader through Delight, a student instructor for the gaming Arts, and try to get involved any other way I can. The RA position has also helped me get more rooted in events and opportunities on and off campus.”

“I applied to be a Resident Assistant because I wanted to be a leader on campus. My freshman year I looked up to all the Resident Assistants and leaders on campus and said, ‘I want that to be me one day.’ I now get to play that role and be the leader that people look up to on campus. I feel my favorite thing about being an RA is the interactions with residents. I strive to help people and be a friendly face. I love to create community within my building to bring everyone together for a better experience. I am also on the Esports team competing in Call of Duty.”
