The Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program at Shawnee State University is rooted in the mission of the social work profession: to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic needs of all people, with particular attention to those who are vulnerable, oppressed, or living in poverty.
Guided by the core values of social justice, dignity, and the worth of every individual, our program is committed to preparing skilled and compassionate social workers who are equipped to create meaningful change in their communities.
Situated in Southern Ohio, and with a deep connection to Scioto County, our program emphasizes addressing the unique challenges faced by this region, including generational poverty, the opioid crisis, limited access to healthcare, and systemic barriers to education and employment. Through rigorous coursework, immersive field experiences, and a focus on culturally responsive practice, students learn to engage with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities to promote resilience, advocacy, and empowerment.
While our program focuses on preparing students to tackle the pressing issues within our local context, the skills and knowledge gained in SSU’s BSW program extend far beyond Scioto County. Graduates of the SSU BSW program are prepared to transfer their expertise to diverse settings, addressing social problems in rural, suburban, and urban areas alike. Whether working in Southern Ohio or other regions, our graduates leave with the skills to make lasting impact wherever their careers take them.
The SSU BSW program is dedicated to fostering a generation of social workers who lead with empathy, advocate for justice, and inspire change, both locally and globally.
