Choosing a Course of Study in Mathematics

The Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Sciences with Generalist Concentration is a traditional pure mathematics degree.

Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Sciences with Adolescent to Young Adult Licensure (Grades 7-12) is available for students who wish to become secondary school teachers. Students who wish to become middle school teachers should refer to the Bachelor of Science in Education with Middle Childhood Licensure (Grades 4-9) offered through the Department of Teacher Education.

The Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Sciences with Actuarial Concentration is available for students who would like to be actuaries.

The Minor in the Mathematical Sciences is for students who wish to supplement their major in another program with a program of coursework in mathematics

The General Education Program (GEP), which is required of all students pursuing a baccalaureate degree at Shawnee State University, includes a Quantitative Reasoning Requirement, which is satisfied by taking a mathematics course carrying the GEP designation.

Career, Professional, & Graduate Information

People with degrees in the mathematical sciences enter a wide variety of professions, including careers in business and finance, computer science, law, industry, and education. According to a salary survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, bachelor's degree candidates in mathematics received starting offers averaging $43,304 a year in 2005. The mathematical sciences major prepares students for careers in which analytic, problem solving, and quantitative skills are of central importance.

The study of mathematics is an appropriate foundation the pursuit of a master's or doctorate degree in a variety of areas, including business administration, computer science, economics, engineering, law, and medicine.  Students from our program have entered graduate programs in biostatistics, computer science, education, mathematics, and meteorology.
