Finding his way to Shawnee State University to join the Men’s Golf program, Gavin Baker (Hometown: South Webster, Ohio) was aware of the good reputation of the university’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. Feeling a strong connection and faith in wanting to help others, he knew this was the career path for him.

“I’ve always known I wanted to do something that would allow me to help others and make a meaningful impact in people’s lives,” he said.

Finding his courses to be preparing him for several career opportunities in his future, Baker knows his decision to pursue his BSN will open more doors for him in his choices.

“I am unsure of exactly what I want to do after graduation because of how many great options graduating with my BSN would give me, but I hope to someday work in pediatrics,” he said.

The BSN program at SSU gives students a competitive edge in the health care field. The program prepares students to confront the changes in science, technology and nature, and settings of nursing practice. Baker encourages others to consider pursuing a career in the nursing field and for those studying towards their degree to remember why they are wanting to enter the career.

“I highly suggest it as it is a very rewarding field to go into,” he said. “If you do decide to pursue nursing, what you put into it is what you get out of it, and always stay reminded of what it is that is pulling you towards it.”

Offering several pathways to prepare nurses to enter the in-demand workforce, the SSU School of Nursing continues to equip students with the skills needed to impact the health and well-being of the region.
