A native of Flatwoods, Kentucky, Hunter Correll found a welcoming environment on campus when visiting Shawnee State University for the first time. Exploring his passion, he decided to pursue a degree in Exercise Science within the university’s Allied Health Science department.

“I chose Exercise Science as my major because of my passion for fitness and learning about the human body and its functions,” he said.

Within the classroom, Correll has enjoyed being able to learn not only from his professors but from participating hands-on in learning techniques and best practices.

“My favorite part about classes are the labs because that is where you get to do hands-on work and sometimes do some fun activities,” he said.

Looking towards his career after graduation, Correll hopes to help others better themselves through his work.

“I hope to be a personal trainer and train people who want to better themselves and athletes who want to improve their skills,” he said.

To students interested in pursuing a degree in Exercise Science, Correll encourages them to get the most out of their education.

“Challenge yourself in the classes and ask questions because you learn many things that will reflect into the working environment and to your own knowledge,” he said.

SSU’s Exercise Science program teaches students to assess and evaluate fitness levels for individuals and groups, and design, implement, manage, and evaluate fitness programs. Many graduates find careers in both public and private health and fitness facilities as well as worksite and health care settings.
