Just finishing his sophomore year at Shawnee State University, Imran Rahman is looking forward to continuing his Sport Management degree. Being a student-athlete and sport fan himself, he felt the major connected with him on a personal level.

“Being an athlete and being interested in a future in the business side of the sports industry, it was an easy choice,” he said. “Sport Management was the perfect fit for me.”

Referring to the business and operations side of the sport industry, SSU’s Sport Management degree equips students with skills to excel in sports careers related to marketing, advertising, ticket sales, ordering and maintaining equipment and supplies, planning of sports facilities, team travel, public relations, and ensuring compliance with league rules, among many others. Students in the program will complete required practicum experiences that complement their classroom experience while providing valuable work experience in the field.

In Rahman’s time in the classroom, the faculty within the program have been a strong asset to his education as they keep their students a top priority.

“The professors have been very helpful, and communicating with them has been easy,” he said. “They are dedicated to helping me achieve all my academic goals.”

A member of the university’s Men’s Soccer team, Rahman has had to improve and maintain his time management skills to excel both inside and outside of the classroom.

“At times the workload can be quite heavy – combining class and homework with training is not always easy,” he said. “The professors have been very helpful and I think communication is the key to staying on track.”

A native of Malaysia, Rahman hopes to stay and work in the United States after completing his degree. He wants to be able to continue his soccer career on a professional level, but also to stay connected to the sport.

“If it does not work out for me, I would like to work with a team here in the United States,” he said. “But no matter what sport, I will be looking for a future within the sport industry.”
