Scholarship Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship
- Maintain full-time, degree-seeking student status (12+ credit hours each semester)
- File the FAFSA
- Participate in the Matt Matthews Scholar Early Arrival Program (Sunday August 13th, 2023)
- Maintain 2.0 GPA to renew annually
The Matt Matthews Scholar Early Arrival Program is designed to develop, prepare, and gain skills necessary to navigate life at SSU, aiding their transition from high school to college and integrating them into SSU and Portsmouth communities.
How to Apply
To be considered for a Matt Matthews Scholarship, incoming students will need to submit a personal biography and 750-word essay answering the prompt “What is your vision of a college that fully embraces diversity?”
Eustace P. "Matt" Matthews, Jr. worked as the Director of Student Support Services and the Coordinator of Multicultural Student Affairs at Shawnee State University. He retired from Shawnee State of July of 2012. He died on Sunday, April 28, 2013, at the age of 78.
Matt mentored many young people at Shawnee State University and in the Portsmouth community. While at Shawnee, he was instrumental in the creation of the AHANA student organization. To continue the legacy that he left, a Shawnee State AHANA student scholarship was established in his name.
