Graduating from Shawnee State University in 2018 with her Bachelor of Science in Psychology, Adrianna Adams is currently serving as a school social worker for the Southern Ohio Educational Service Center (ESC). Using her psychology background to propel herself in to a career in social work, Adams is grateful for how her SSU degree prepared her.

“In the Psychology program at SSU I gained a better understanding of human behavior, research methods, and cultural sensitivity which equipped me with a strong foundation for working with diverse populations,” she said. “My professors taught me about theoretical frameworks and empirical studies but also modeled empathy, compassion, and professionalism, instilling in me the importance of treating individuals with dignity and respect. Their mentorship and guidance helped me develop effective communication skills, critical thinking, and problem-solving strategies, which have been essential in my work as a social worker.”

In her role at the ESC, Adams works primarily with 11th and 12th grade students in the region, helping them prepare to transition to adulthood while acknowledging many face issues involving finding permanent housing after graduating high school.

“Accessing resources after graduation is a big barrier that a lot of our students are facing,” she said. “We try to help to bridge that gap. Here's how you get a loan. Here's how you build your resume. A lot of these things are not taught to our students, so that's something that has been very challenging.”

Coming into the field of social work with a psychology background, Adams felt the education she received at SSU allowed her to set herself apart in her career.

“Utilizing my psychology background, I've been able to look at human beings differently and am able to understand that not everyone is in the same mindset that I am,” she said. “I think that my psychology background, and Shawnee as a whole, has made me just more aware of others. It’s that background in psychology that has allowed me to be more empathetic and be able to be more understanding of those situations.”

In her career, Adams has been grateful for the guidance and mentorship she received while completing her degree at SSU.

“Some of my favorite memories at SSU involve my time in the classroom learning,” she said. “What resonated with me was the recognition that social work is not just about providing services, but about empowering individuals and communities to overcome adversity and build resilience. I was inspired by the ways in which social workers advocate for change, challenge societal norms, and foster a sense of belonging and connection among those they serve.”

SSU’s Psychology program offers a range of diversity of courses in the fields of developmental, social, clinical, cognitive, and biological psychology. The field gives students insights into the ways that people feel, think, and behave, as well as the tools and methods to study those processes. Many graduates of the program continue on to pursue a graduate or professional degree in social work, counseling, psychology, medicine, law, and neuroscience.

As the world of social work continues to grow to meet community demand, Adams encourages others to look into the career path and find their meaning in wanting to help people.

“To be a voice for people is really something that I find just really empowering,” she said.
