Graduating this fall with her Bachelor of Science in Organismal Biology, Brie Dalton from McDermott, Ohio is looking forward to using her love of animals and biology to help the environment.

“I always knew I wanted to have a career in this field,” she said.

Working hands-on in the classroom and in the field, Dalton has been preparing for a career that will allow her to make a difference in the surrounding forests. Working closely with her classmates and professors, one of her favorite memories is being able to participate in a small mammal trapping project in her Mammalogy course that allowed her to work with animals while practicing documenting the different traits of small mammals. Being in smaller class sizes, Dalton feels she has been able to build important networks with experts in her field.

“I have loved the relationships I have been able to build with my professors and fellow students,” she said.

Looking towards her future, Dalton wants to combine her original passions with the knowledge she’s gained in her degree to help educate others.

“I hope to work in national or state nature preserves helping people understand the importance of protecting our forests and the animals in them,” she said.

The Organismal Biology program at SSU provides students with the depth and diversity of study in biological sciences to be prepared for a number or opportunities – whether that be in professional, medical or graduate school or for immediate entry into the scientific workforce. Offering a broad foundation in life science, students are able to pursue particular areas of biology that they have an interest in.
