Shawnee State University has announced the 2023 Faculty Awards. As part of this year’s presentation, the recipient of the Early Career Faculty Teaching Award is Marie Richey. An Assistant Professor of Dental Hygiene, Professor Richey has been with the university since 2020.

Professor Richey received her Associate of Applied Sciences from Ferris State University in 1998 before receiving her Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene from the institution as well. In 2020, she received her Master of Science in Dental Hygiene from UT Health San Antonio.

“I am honored to receive the SSU Early Career Teaching Award,” said Richey. “This is recognition for all of the hard work I have put into my students since coming to SSU in 2020. I have been blessed to be surrounded with great faculty and support staff in the Dental Hygiene program and in the College of Professional Studies. I love working with students and helping to educate future dental hygiene professionals here at SSU.”

Before coming to SSU, Richey worked as a Clinical Registered Dental Hygienist at private practices focusing on periodontal and general dentistry. She worked in education at Kellog Community College, Grand Rapids Community College, and Lansing Community College starting in 2015 through 2020 before starting at SSU. She is a member of the Ohio Dental Hygienists’ Association and the American Dental Education Association. In 2023, she served as the Chair of the SSU Celebration of Scholarship Committee.

The Early Career Faculty Teaching Award acknowledges outstanding teaching of a new member of the faculty at Shawnee State University and recognizing the excellence of faculty impact on students, scholarly approach to teaching and learning, and contributions to undergraduate education.
