A senior in the Biomedical Sciences (Pre-Med) program at Shawnee State University, Hanna Tackett is grateful for the number of achievements she was able to complete while pursuing her degree.
“Small class sizes were a plus,” she said. “It makes it a lot easier to get closer with professors and easier to apply for graduate schools.”
A native of Lucasville, Ohio, Tackett has found a home on campus in her degree, as part of several clubs – including Tri-Beta, Pre-Med Club, and Sociology Club - and as a member of the Women’s Swimming team where she serves as a captain. Inside the classroom, Tackett has been able to complete several research tenures in science and medicine. Last summer, she was presented at the national convention for the Tri-Beta Biological Honors Society on leukemia research before completing an internship at the Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center studying lung and colon cancers.
“Shawnee has definitely supported me, provided a grant to do my internship in Buffalo, and also helped with travel expenses to Oklahoma,” she said.
In addition to the smaller class sizes within the Pre-Med program at SSU, students receive the preparation to enter medical or professional school with a strong foundation in biology and a development of scientific research skills. Pre-Med students at SSU also have the opportunity to complete an advanced human anatomy course where students can participate in a human cadaver dissection lab.
“I don’t think I would have found this opportunity anywhere else,” said Tackett.
SSU also offers an Early Assurance Program within the Pre-Med degree. A new partnership with Ohio University’s Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, the program allows high-performing high school students to receive admittance to the medical college before entering SSU, giving them a guaranteed path to completing their medical degree.
