The daughter of an alumna of Shawnee State University, Avery Johnson (Hometown: Chillicothe, Ohio) knew she found the place to pursue a degree in Computer Engineering Technology after she visited campus.
“I went on a tour of campus, and I instantly fell in love with the atmosphere and all that Shawnee had to offer,” she said.
Finding a passion for technology in high school, Johnson took advantage of all the technology classes she could take during her high school years. Continuing to pursue those opportunities in her degree at SSU, she enjoys getting to transfer her skills into hands-on projects.
“My favorite part of my classes has to be all the fun and interesting projects we have done,” she said. “Last semester, my group designed a hand that could do ASL. It was difficult, but we did it and had a ton of fun along the way.”
Opening herself up to the opportunities her degree can provide her after graduation, Johnson is excited to see what path she may land in.
“I have not pinpointed the exact job I would like to pursue after college, but I do have a couple I am interested in,” she said. “Some of these jobs include computer systems analyst, technical support specialist, and I also thought about starting and teaching a computer engineering program for high schoolers interested in Computer Engineering.”
Wanting to share her love of technology and engineering with others, Johnson encourages other students to consider the opportunities and possibilities a degree in Computer Engineering Technology can create.
“Computer Engineering offers so much variety of knowledge and experience that you are bound to find something that you love,” she said.
SSU’s Computer Engineering program emphasizes the ethics of computer science as well as the communication skills needed to interact with internal and external customers. Coursework in the program is divided among computer, science, and engineering courses, giving students an intensive training in advancing technology.
