A native of Brazil, Theo Trindade came to Shawnee State University to play for the Men’s Soccer program. While he had visited the United States on vacation before, he was not sure what to expect when arriving to SSU for the first time.

“It’s almost perfect,” he said, recapping his experience so far. “Everything for me is different here. It’s a new experience.”

Adapting to life in America was difficult at first for Trindade. Getting used to everything from social interactions to the types of food served in the Bear’s Den Dining Hall, he had to get familiar with the environment he was in.

“It’s a little bit of a struggle at first to get used to how people are here, because they are different than in Brazil,” he said.

Overcoming those first difficulties, Trindade found a great support system in his teammates and also his fellow international students. Even before setting foot on campus, Trindade was able to connect with several current and alumni players from the soccer team to learn more about the university.

“They had only good things to say,” Trindade said.

Since arriving at SSU, Trindade has felt his welcome has been very hospitable and appreciated as he continues to receive help from people on campus, along with his teammates.

“Everything that you need, they help to try and provide” he said, adding about his teammates. “They are a good support.”

Connecting with the international students coming to SSU from various countries around the world, Trindade is grateful to be able to speak with students going through the same situation as him.

“The other international students are a good support as well because they already know this feeling,” he said. “They know what it’s like to be away from home in a foreign area. They know what I need, so they can help in any way.”

The Center for International Programs & Study Abroad (CIPSA) at SSU provides the campus community with the opportunity to appreciate different values and cultures from around the world. CIPSA and its staff helps current international students to fully participate in their college experience, coordinating campus services and programming that enhances their social and academic success.
