“This is my first year in the Honors Program, but I really like it,” she said.

Offering students personalized attention, experiential learning, and priority registration, the SSU Honors Program allows students exceeding academically to explore their interests and connect with other students in a dedicated learning environment. Storer has found this experience at SSU to be a better experience than she would probably have encountered at a larger university.

“Shawnee State is close to home and the class sizes are small,” she said. “It is easier to get to know the professors.”

Admission into the university’s Honors Program is selective and competitive. The program accepts incoming freshmen every fall semester and encourages those applications to be made by Apr. 1 for the upcoming fall semester. For current SSU students, applications must be submitted by Nov. 1 for spring consideration.

“There is a lot of diversity in the program, and this opens the doors to meet a lot of people,” said Storer. “Overall, it is a really good program and the Director of the Honors Program, Pablo Salinas, does a really good job with it.”
