Grace Smith, a native of Sciotoville, Ohio, is very direct in her opinion about Shawnee State University.
“Coming to Shawnee made me realize that this is the best decision I have ever made,” she said, “I have made so many friends, lifelong.”
A junior majoring in Adolescent-to-Young Adult 7-12 Social Studies Education, Smith is also minoring in Sport Management. Off campus, she is a coach of cheer, basketball, and volleyball. On campus, she stays extremely active on campus as the Vice President of the sorority Theta Phi Alpha, Vice President for Circle K International community service group, and she is also the President of the Shawnee Panhellenic Council.
Smith is also a member of Project BEAR, helping to promote literacy throughout the region by working with elementary children. Students can have any interest or major and still be a member of Project BEAR, who’s initiative promotes the Ohio Governor’s Imagination Library in seven counties across southeast Ohio. She has found the project very rewarding.
“This has been my favorite job,” she said. “I am going to be a high school teacher, but I love Project BEAR so much that I might stay another year to get my K-3 credentials.”
Staying active on campus, Smith feels that several doors have been opened for her in her future career.
“I have really enjoyed my years here,” she said.
