Shawnee State University’s student organization AHANA (African, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American) is designed to increase awareness of diversity and multi-cultural aspects to the student body and campus community. The club encourages interactions between its members and other students of different backgrounds and is committed to helping students cope and learn the university's system, while also fostering a spirit of unity and togetherness, by taking an active role in community service projects.

“The mission of AHANA is to be a safe place for people of all ethnicities, and to embrace and celebrate our differences,” said Destiny Payne.

A member since her freshman year, Payne is the current Social Chair within AHANA. In her role, she helps plan and execute events for the group. Recently the group hosted a number of volunteer opportunities and is planning to host a talent show next semester. The group meets weekly on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. and welcomes anyone on campus to join their organization.

“My favorite part of AHANA is being in a diverse community with people that I may not normally interact with,” Payne said.

SSU has over 50 active clubs and organizations – ranging from social groups to fraternity and sorority life, and honors clubs and academic programs. Many students who get involved have a better overall college experience and are more successful after their graduation. Students are encouraged to join and explore existing organizations or even start their own.
