Majoring in Exercise Science with a concentration in Pre-Physical Therapy, Carter Redman is looking forward to the connections he can make with patients through his major. A native of Ontario, Ohio, the senior first found himself at Shawnee State University when he attended a high school soccer tournament held on campus.

“I fell in love with the campus and the atmosphere here,” he said.

Redman chose to major in Exercise Science because he has an internal desire to want to help people. The Exercise Science program at SSU prepares individuals for careers in fitness and health promotion, as well as strength and conditioning and wellness programs. Students learn how to access and evaluate fitness levels for individuals and groups and how to design and implement fitness programs. Redman found this major to be a way to connect with and help patients with their lifestyles without having to pursue a career in a hospital setting.

“I wanted to stay on the medical side of things,” he said.

Keeping himself busy on campus, Redman works as a Resident Assistant for the Office of Housing & Residence Life, is a student representative at the Morris University Center Information Desk, and volunteers as a Student Alumni Ambassador within the Development Office. Combining his strengths with each of those positions, he is often the go-to person to assist students and visitors on campus when it comes to putting on events.

“I am the main person for the setup crew,” he said. “So for any events that take place on campus I am in charge of getting the room ready, getting the tables and chairs where they need to be, and getting them arranged.”
