Kambrayia Elzy, better known as Kam by her friends, is a current senior at Shawnee State University. A native of Tulare, California, Elzy decided to take a chance and move across the country to be a part of the university’s Women’s Basketball team.

“When I got here, I was so welcomed,” she said. “Not just in the athletics building, but by the school in general.”

Getting involved on campus was important for Elzy as she adjusted to her new home. In addition to playing on the Women’s Basketball team, she is a Resident Assistant and served as an Orientation Leader over the summer welcoming new students to campus. She makes sure to take the time to balance her responsibilities for each of her positions.

“Being a student-athlete is already a big responsibility and now that I am a Resident Assistant, I have residents to look over and make sure they’re doing okay,” she said. “As an RA, we have building events every month and we are on call too. On top of that, I work in the Office of Admissions each week as part of my RA work-site.”

Majoring in Individualized Studies, Elzy enjoys how her degree program allows her to explore many career opportunities and that she has now gained experience in multiple professional fields. Using the skills she’s gaining in her campus extracurricular activities with her education, she’s excited to see what comes next once she finishes her degree.
