Evan Bower, a native of McDermott, Ohio chose Shawnee State University with an interest to pursue a major that aligned with his strengths.
“I thought to myself, ‘what did I succeed at in high school?’ and it made me realize it was math,” said Bower.
Bower is in his fourth year of college, including a year of College Credit Plus credits. On track to graduate with two majors – Actuarial Sciences and General Mathematics – he is also minoring in Information Systems (Cybersecurity).
“I took the test that Shawnee State provides about finding your degree based on your interests, and I actually got Actuarial Sciences as a result,” he said.
The Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Sciences with an Actuarial Concentration is for students who want to pursue a career as an actuary. In this career field, professionals will compile and analyze statistics to determine the amount of risk and uncertainty of potential events.
Bower was interested in the degree as it provides him an opportunity to work in risk assessment and to enter a thriving career field. As he completes both of his degrees this year, he also stays active on campus as a member of the Men’s Swimming team.
SSU’s Actuarial Science degree program provides all students with the preparation to pass the first two actuarial exams. Many graduates of the program go on to work for insurance companies, private corporations, as consultants, in government, or in banking and financial institutions.
