Shawnee State University’s Offices of Career Services and Workforce Development collaborated to host a Resume & Cover Letter workshop for those students enrolled in the SSU Nursing programs who received the Choose Ohio First Scholarship. The event was part of the Lunch & Learn series that provides those scholarship recepients with opportunities for professional development, networking, and personal growth.

Austin Raines, Assistant Director of Career Services, led the workshop for students in attendance, walking students through the steps of building a professional resume that highlights their skills while also teaching them how to write a formal cover letter.

“This workshop is vital because I teach students how to market themselves and gain an edge in today's job market by learning how to write an effective resume and cover letter,” said Raines. “We go over proper formatting and what is appropriate to represent their experience, determine what content to include and what to leave out, and how to write effective accomplishment statements.”

Angie Duduit, Director of Workforce Development and the Director of the Choose Ohio First Grant on campus provided an introduction to LinkedIn and Handshake to help students understand how they could use online platforms to promote themselves and their skills. Combining this information with the information provided by Raines, Duduit felt that the event was important for students to take advantage of during their time at SSU.

“This event helped to raise awareness of available careers and employers, how to connect with them, and how to apply for positions to secure good careers in the future,” she said.

Funded in part through the Ohio Department of Higher Education, the Choose Ohio First Scholarship program is intended to help meet workforce needs in disadvantaged Ohio populations. The program is part of Ohio’s initiative to increase the number of degrees in STEM-related fields. Scholarships valued from $1,500 up to full tuition were made possible with a combination of Choose Ohio First funding, institutional funds, and SSU Development Foundation scholarship funding.
