Students in the Shawnee State University Chemistry Club hosted Dr. Mindy Varney during their most recent club meeting for a presentation. Dr. Varney is an assistant professor for the Department of Pharmaceutical Science & Research for the School of Pharmacy at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia.

During her presentation, Dr. Varney discussed her research projects, opportunities for summer research, and what her current pharmacy students are working on. Students were also able to ask an Admission Associate questions about applying and participating in the School of Pharmacy’s Doctoral Program.

“The presentation from Dr. Varney was truly inspiring,” said Gavin Rose, current Chemistry Club President. “As a chemistry major actively working on a research project, it was interesting to hear what she had to say about her research as a professional.”

SSU’s Chemistry Club connects students majoring in chemistry, those taking a related course, or students who enjoy science together to try new things and meet new people. Rose credits the club for his willingness to be more outgoing and network with others from his major.

“As a Chemistry major, this club is really important to me,” said Rose. “I have been able to network with industry professionals, meet new friends, and work on fun experiments. It really helps to broaden students’ knowledge when it comes to science.”

SSU’s Bachelor of Science in Chemistry offers three academic tracks for students: General, Industrial, and Pre-Pharmacy. The General Track offers courses set forth by the American Chemical Society including a comprehensive course listing in all areas of modern chemistry. The Industrial Track offers a broad overview of chemistry while also providing courses in geology, biology, and statistics. The Pre-Pharmacy Track meets all the common pre-requisites for pharmacy school admission by providing foundation course work in four areas of chemistry: organic, physical, analytical, and biochemistry.
