Shawnee State University’s Office of Title IX, the Women's & Gender Equity Center, and the Peer Drop-In Center recently hosted a Silent Witness Ceremony on campus. The event was held to honor survivors and remember those who had lost their lives to domestic violence.

The Silent Witness Ceremony included a silhouette exhibit which featured life-size cutouts of individuals and real stories of those who had experienced domestic violence.

“We also ran profiles with photos of those who have lost their lives to domestic violence on the screen in the lobby of the Vern Riffe,” said Desiree Isaac, SSU’s Title IX Coordinator. “The actual ceremony consisted of speakers sharing their stories of survival.”

Hosted as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the offices hoped to use this event to create a community of understanding and empowerment on campus.

“We hope attendees left with a better sense of the impact of domestic violence, as well as a feeling that we, as a campus community, are here to provide support and services for survivors,” said Isaac.
