A freshman this year at Shawnee State University, Zinedine Purbo was welcomed as the first international student from Indonesia to enroll at the university as an international student. Majoring in Information Security, he was interested in the university because he wanted to pursue a career in cybersecurity. As Purbo had learned English prior to coming to America, he found his ability to communicate with the campus community was a major advantage for him when he first arrived.
“I struggled at first with being homesick, but since I’ve met new friends here, things have gotten much better,” he said, encouraging other international students considering coming to SSU to practice the language so they feel more comfortable among the students and faculty.
In addition to his major, Purbo is involved with SSU Athletics as a student-athlete on the men’s tennis team under the direction of Head Coach Steve Boone.
“My team has been very welcoming and has helped me adapt to life at Shawnee,” he said.
While at SSU, Purbo is excited to also be able to be involved with campus life and looks forward to attending the many activities held for students outside of his class work.
“I am excited for what the rest of my time will bring here at Shawnee State University,” he said.
SSU currently has over 60 international students representing nearly thirty countries around the world and are enrolled in various academic programs. The students are connected with resources through the university’s Center for International Programs & Study Abroad where they can connect with other international students as well as gain information on how to access assistance throughout their time on campus.
