SSU Orientation Leader Tre Beard

May 12, 2022

Helping new students transition into campus life, Shawnee State University’s New Student Orientation allows incoming students to meet other SSU students, tour campus, receive their first course schedule, and learn about on-campus resources available. Tre Beard, a sophomore studying Business Management, is excited to be serving in his second year as an Orientation Leader.

“I love being able to interact with future students and share my experiences with them,” he said.

Along with being an Orientation Leader, Beard is a member of the Men’s Basketball program and was part of the 2021 NAIA National Championship winning team. Being able to share his memories on campus with incoming students, is one of his favorite experiences at SSU.

“When I first visited campus, it just felt like home,” he said. “Everyone was so welcoming and I had the opportunity to play basketball.”

Orientation Leaders assist incoming students and parents throughout their New Student Orientation through advising sessions, academic meet and greets, and campus and housing tours. They are some of the most recognizable faces for students to ask questions to and receive assistance from throughout the day.

“I like to share with new students why I chose SSU, as well as why they should,” he said. “Being an Orientation Leader has improved my communication skills which are important skills I’ll use in my future career and in life in general.”

Looking forward to the remaining Orientation season, Beard encourages incoming students and their families to connect with the Orientation Leaders throughout their time on campus.

“Don’t hesitate if you have a question!” he said, noting that Orientation Leaders go through weeks of training to make sure they have the information to assist all incoming students.

Students participating in SSU’s New Student Orientation will meet with university President Jeff Bauer as well as their academic Deans throughout the day. They will receive their first semester schedule, get their SSU Bear Card student ID, and meet with an academic advisor. For those parents in attendance, information sessions will be offered as well as additional campus and housing tours.
