EMT students in lab

The EMT course at SSU offers students the chance to obtain information that serves as the foundation for emergency care skills and knowledge related to the field. Principles of emergency care, medical and traumatic emergencies, administering CPR, obtaining and recording vital signs, patient handling techniques, ambulance operation, light rescue techniques, and other emergency care procedures are included in the EMT coursework.

The EMT Course is one hundred fifty hours and consists of classroom, lab, vehicle, and hospital clinical time conducted through the Emergency Department at local hospitals. The course lasts approximately seventeen weeks. Meeting times include Tuesdays, Thursdays and every other Friday from 6:00 p.m. – 8:50 p.m. There will also be three to four scheduled Saturday sessions averaging six hours each.

Tuition for the EMT course is $700 plus book costs. Students may pay the full balance up front or choose a payment plan and pay in two or three separate payments. The full amount or first payment amount is due by week two of the course.

The EMT course is limited to 20 students. All students will be given a reading comprehension test their first night of class. A pre-entrance physical exam, background check, and drug screening are all required before beginning the course. Students must provide a letter of intent to pay from their employer, city, or township in order to register for the class. Letters must include a contact, mailing address, email, and phone number and should either be emailed to aduduit@shawnee.edu or mailed to Shawnee State University, 940 Second Street, Portsmouth, OH 45662, ATTN: Workforce Development. Letters of intent may also be delivered in person to the Office of Workforce Development in Administration 101.

Students can return the completed EMT application to Paul Foit in the Health Sciences Building, Room 142 on SSU’s campus or mail it to Shawnee State University, 940 Second Street, Portsmouth, Ohio 45662, ATTN: Emergency Medical Technology.
