Graduating this month from Shawnee State University with a bachelor’s degree in Mathematical Sciences, Chillicothe, Ohio native Sydney Crawford has decided to further her education by enrolling in a graduate program at SSU.
“I am majoring in Mathematical Sciences with actuarial and generalist concentrations,” she said. “After graduation, I have a summer internship with Nationwide and I will begin my Master’s degree in mathematics through SSU.”
When considering which college to attend, Crawford decided she wanted to feel like she was more than a number and was looking to attend a university that was close-knit among the students.
“I valued finding an experience that was similar to my experience in a smaller high school,” she said. “I have appreciated the opportunity to work closely with my peers and professors. SSU was within commuting distance for me, and I have been able to connect with fellow commuters over this shared experience.”
Crawford strived to find ways to stay involved on campus as a commuter by connecting with friends and attending events. She is also a member of her major’s honor society, Pi Mu Epsilon.
“I am grateful for all of the people and experiences I’ve encountered at Shawnee,” she said.
SSU’s Department of Mathematical Sciences provides students with an appreciation of the role of mathematics in our society. The department provides a broad intellectual foundation in undergraduate mathematics, fosters reasoning and problem-solving skills, and gives students the opportunity to combine their interest in mathematics with preparation for a variety of career options.
