A Maysville, Kentucky native, Kirstyn Gulley always had a love for teeth, making her decision to pursue a degree in Dental Hygiene at Shawnee State University an easy one.

“Growing up, I have always loved all things teeth,” she said. “I also enjoy helping others which is a huge part of dental hygiene and patient education in the clinic.”

Working hands-on in the on-campus Dr. James Kadel Dental Hygiene Clinic, Gulley has already been able to witness the impact her education has had on patients.

“I feel that Dental Hygiene is so rewarding because we are able to see our patients feel better about their oral care after an appointment,” she said.

With an array of dental hygiene services performed by students in the clinic, Gulley and her classmates have been able to take lessons in the classroom directly into real scenarios with patients.

“My favorite part of my classes is learning new concepts and being able to implement new techniques in the clinic,” she said. “I had the opportunity of helping assist the first-year class in clinic and I enjoyed being able to help the students better their skills.”

Looking forward to graduating next spring, Gulley encourages others wanting a rewarding career to consider pursuing a degree in Dental Hygiene.

“My advice for a student interested in Dental Hygiene would be to have faith in yourself, stay organized, and put forth your best effort in everything you do,” she said. “I encourage everyone who loves oral hygiene to apply to the Dental Hygiene Program at SSU. You will learn something new every day!”
