Shawnee State University’s Office of the President has announced Jamie Barker will become Shawnee State University’s Chief External Relations Officer beginning January 1, 2025, responsible for Government, Corporate & Community Relations.

“Jamie understands the needs of students, families, and businesses in Appalachian Ohio,” SSU President Eric Andrew Braun, said. “He has spent his career building relationships that foster true collaboration as we all work together to strengthen Shawnee State and its impact to all who live, work and learn here.”

Mr. Barker joined SSU this year to serve as Director of the SSU Center for Appalachian Public Policy and to support external relations for the College of Health & Human Services. He brings vast experience in government relations, constituent engagement, regional politics, and education to the role. As a former high school teacher, township trustee, and Southeast Ohio District Director for the Office of US Senator Rob Portman, Jamie has built impressive relationships throughout Ohio.

“Our legislators, business leaders, and community partners recognize and support Shawnee State University and the significant contributions we make to the region,” said Barker. “They believe in our mission, and I look forward to working with people throughout Ohio to strengthen relationships and amplify the Shawnee State University story.”

As Chief External Relations Officer, he will communicate directly and regularly with elected and government officials and a range of university partners to advocate for the advancement of higher education in our region. He will also work with SSU leadership to develop comprehensive strategies to build relationships with regional employers and our community — and develop internal structures to support these efforts.

Barker earned a Master’s Degree in Social Science and a Bachelor of Science in Education from Ohio University.
