A Greenup, Kentucky native, Hannah Blevins felt a strong family connection to nursing. Her grandmother being a nurse, she was inspired to pursue her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) at Shawnee State University.
“She was my biggest role model and the strongest person I knew,” she said. “She was a nurse for many years, and I loved hearing all the stories she would tell me, so she really inspired me.”
Finding a similar family within the classroom, Blevins has been grateful for how her BSN cohort has helped her throughout the program so far.
“I have become really close with my classmates and my professors,” she said. “In the BSN program you are with the same classmates for at least three years. There are many ups and downs, so you learn to lean on one another.”
In addition to her studies, Blevins has been working as a Nurse Intern at Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC) in Portsmouth where she’s been able to receive additional hands-on training in the field.
“Being able to work as an intern at SOMC has allowed me to be a student in the classroom as well as on the hospital floor,” she said.
Planning to graduate in 2026, Blevins already has her sights set on the next step in her career.
“What I hope to do in the future is to work a few years as an RN and then further my education to pursue my dream of becoming a Nurse Practitioner,” she said.
The accredited BSN program at SSU gives graduates a competitive advantage when entering the health care field after completing their degree. Prepared to confront the changes in science, technology and nature, and settings of nursing practice, graduates are equipped to deliver comprehensive patient care in many specialties. Offering several pathways for those wanting to enter the workforce, the SSU School of Nursing continues to produce in-demand nurses that impact the health and well-being of the region.
