Graduating this semester with a Bachelor’s in Marketing, Matt Stam found his way to Shawnee State University to continue his collegiate soccer career and further his academic study in business. A native of Girona, Spain, he wanted to focus his business skills in a specific area.

“After completing my associate’s degree in Business Administration I wanted to choose my niche and choose one field,” he said. “I talked to Dr. (Jason) Lovins and he convinced me to switch from Management to Marketing.”

As an international student-athlete, Stam has appreciated how the small class sizes on campus have allowed him to easily make connections with his classmates and professors.

“The best part of the classes, in my opinion, is that they make you bond with your peers and professor,” he said. “You spend a whole semester with them in a class. And for us internationals, those bonds mean a lot.”

Looking towards his career after graduation, Stam hopes to work in the marketing field before starting his own business. Feeling prepared to start his career, he’s grateful for the impact his mentors have made on him.

“My main advice is to enjoy what you are doing and choose who is guiding you,” he said. “For me, I had the luck of having Dr. Lovins guide me through these years, and I am grateful.”

SSU’s Marketing program is designed to teach concepts as well as applied principles in the fast-paced field. Students have the opportunities to work in professional environments through partnerships with local businesses, non-profits, and other organizations, as well as complete agency studies to conduct market analysis, strategic planning, graphics and content creation, and more through collaborative work with their peers and professional organizations.
