“Shawnee State is a better institution because Skip Miller decided to begin a teaching career 22 years ago,” said SSU President Eric Braun. “He came to Shawnee State after a very successful career in chemical engineering. He is respected by students, alumni, and industry partners. We’re proud to have him continue representing Shawnee State as Faculty Emeritus.”

During his time on campus, Dr. Miller championed the Plastics Engineering Technology program, building community and industry partnerships to provide his students with competitive internships and job opportunities. He also was instrumental in the program receiving ABET accreditation – awarded by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission – making SSU one of only four bachelor programs in the world to earn this designation.

“I think Skip’s most impactful contribution to Shawnee State was how he emphasized student-focused culture in the Plastics program,” said SSU Chair of Engineering Technologies Adam Miller. “I first knew Skip as a professor and advisor and then later knew him as a colleague. As a professor, he was extremely approachable and available to students to help them navigate their way through the college experience and into industry. This investment in students, relationships, and their future translated into engaged alumni that continue to be invested in the program and university as they’ve transitioned to industry. With the culture and foundation Skip developed, we will carry this engagement with students and industry forward.”

Faculty Emeritus status is a distinguished award designation bestowed to faculty members who have retired from their academic faculty position. In SSU’s 38-year history, 39 retired faculty members have received the recognition. During Dr. Miller’s time on campus, he saw the graduation of over 250 students in the Plastics Engineering Technology program, many of whom he has stayed in contact with to follow their career paths and successes within the industry.
