“Shawnee State, since its inception, is the economic opportunity engine of the community and its students,” Schisler said. “I look forward to what the future holds for both community and students and learning more about the complex environment of higher education.”

A graduate of Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, VA, Schisler worked in Washington D.C. in multiple roles with the U.S. Department of Labor and as a White House aide before coming to Portsmouth.

“Joining the Shawnee State board is an honor and a full-circle experience for me,” she said. “When my husband, Dick, and I moved to Portsmouth, my first job was setting up an Office of Public Information at what was then Shawnee State Community College. Now I return to once again share the SSU story and participate in its governance.”

“The board will benefit from the perspectives and input Reverend Schisler brings to this position,” Evans said. “Her professional and personal leadership experience, her prior higher education service and her work with numerous community organizations make a strong addition to the membership of our board.”

“We look forward to working with Sallie as collectively we address current issues and decisions in higher education and plan for Shawnee’s long-term future,” SSU Interim President Eric Braun said. “Her expertise will be a tremendous help for the board, administration, faculty, staff and of course, our number one priority, our students.”

In addition to working at SSU, Schisler worked at Southern Ohio Medical Center as Assistant to the President. She served as the Vicar at Christ Episcopal in Ironton and presently is the Supply Pastor at St. Paul Lutheran Church, in Ironton, OH and Episcopal Diocese of Southern Ohio Missioner. She is an Honorary Canon of Christ Church Episcopal Cathedral in Cincinnati, OH.

Schisler has been an active member of numerous civic organizations in the Portsmouth area, including being past president of the Scioto Foundation, WOMEN, Inc., Compass Community Health, Past Vice President of The Counseling Center, and member of Impact Prevention in Ironton, the Lawrence County Ministerial Society and the Procter Camp and Conference Center in London, OH.

Residing in the Portsmouth area, Schisler and her husband, the Honorable Richard T. Schisler, retired Municipal Court Judge, have two grown sons.
