Gabe Welch of Wheelersburg, Ohio has found that Shawnee State University offers everything he needs to follow in his father’s footsteps. With SSU being both his parents’ alma mater and his father working in the electromechanical line of work, there’s no better place for Welch than in the university’s Electromechanical Engineering Technology (EET) program.
Appreciative of the interactive experience within the program, Welch acknowledges the skills he’s gained that he might not have received at a different university.
“The program offers very hands-on labs, especially with the robots and simulations,” he said.
Welch has found that the EET program opens an immense number of career opportunities, including an internship with AEP, one of the nation’s largest power utility providers.
“With it just being a two-year program there’s a ton of jobs in this field,” he said. “There are many opportunities whether it be a technician, repairman, assembler, and for me personally, it has opened up a door with the power company”.
Welch appreciates how personal and tight-knit the program is, and the relationships he’s been able to build with his peers.
“One of the best things I’ve experienced with the program so far is the classes are very student-oriented and it’s very easy to build a relationship,” he said.
Welch added that SSU in general has a lot of programs to aid the students and help them reach their goals.
“On campus there are many things that can help students whether it be tutoring or counseling or other things like that,” he said.
SSU’s Electromechanical Engineering Technology program prepares students to become a competent electromechanical technician capable of working and communicating with engineers, scientists, and production personnel in only two years. At SSU, students in the program have the opportunity to qualify for special scholarships including $1,500 up to full-tuition in Choose Ohio First Scholarships and $3,000 in scholarships supported by Intel.
