Dr. Yi’s lecture, “Culturally Centered Pedagogy in the (Post) Pandemic Era,” will focus on discussing ways in which we develop and employ a more robust and culturally centered pedagogy to teach English Learners (ELs). The lecture will begin by complicating the notions of “culture” and “ELs” in the field of applied linguistics and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) while examining the role of culture in language learning and teaching.

Through Yi’s lecture, she invites her audience to join further thinking about how to help students use culture to make meaning of students’ learning and their life experiences in and outside of school.

Dr. Yi is an Associate Professor in Foreign, Second and Multilingual Language Education in the College of Education and Human Ecology at the Ohio State University. She received her master’s degree in TESOL from Arizona State University and Ph.D. in Foreign and Second Language Education from the Ohio State University. She is currently a co-editor for TESOL Journal, one of the official journals of the TESOL International Association. Her work has appeared in Applied Linguistics, Journal of Second Language Writing, TESOL Quarterly, Canadian Modern Language Review, Computers and Composition, Foreign Language Annals, and many others.

The Jane M.G. Foster Distinguished Lecture Series is sponsored by the SSU Development Foundation and Appalachia UNITE.

The lecture is free of charge and will be hosted virtually at shawnee.edu/lecture-series.
