Dr. Sean Dunne,

Shawnee State University has announced the 2021 Faculty Awards. As part of this year’s presentation, the recipient of the Faculty Research Award is Dr. Sean Dunne. An Associate Professor of Sociology, Dr. Dunne has been with the university’s Department of Social Sciences since 2013.

At SSU, Dr. Dunne has engaged his students to assist in multiple grant applications to better the local community including work on the restoration of the Spartan Municipal Stadium, the funding for the Portsmouth Skatepark Project, and the Spock Memorial Dog Park. Throughout this work, he has been able to help his students build and gain skills necessary for grant projects. His participatory research was the basis for his certification as a Clinical Sociologist in Community Development by the Association of Applied and Clinical Sociologists. As the First Ward Representative and Vice President on Portsmouth City Council, he said he uses the principles and methods of clinical sociology in local government and community development.

Inside his classroom, Dr. Dunne fosters creativity and scholarship interpretation among his students by inviting several guest speakers into his classroom to connect his students with people, topics, and experiences outside the traditional classroom setting. Under his supervision, his students have conducted and presented original research at local and regional conferences, including the annual conference of North Central Sociological association.

The Faculty Research Award which recognizes outstanding research from full-time tenured eligible faculty members, dedicated to research promoting involvement with students, contribution to research within the institution, community, and profession, and support from the campus community.
