A sister to the current Kiwanis and Key Club organizations, Circle K International Club is based on promoting leadership and giving back to the community. Previously active on campus, the club was rechartered in the Autumn 2021 semester at Shawnee State University. The club held their official kick-off meeting in early September and currently consists of four officers on the executive board and approximately twenty members.

“The first meeting went pretty well considering the club is basically starting over again,” said SSU junior and club President Jacob Alley. “There were about ten new members who came that night. It was encouraging and exciting to see people interested to come out to join. We talked about what the club is, its goals for this year, and brainstormed some activities we will be hosting.”

Since one of the club’s main focuses is community service, the Circle K International Club recently attended the annual Portsmouth Kiwanis’ Kids Day. At the event SSU’s Project BEAR and the Portsmouth Public Library donated over 400 books to children to promote literacy and learning in Scioto County. The club helped welcome kids and pass out books throughout the event.

“As an education major and an ambassador for the SSU School of Education, having the club at Kids Day to hand out books meant so much to me because I understand the importance of literacy,” Alley said.

Circle K International also recently hosted a boot camp earlier this month to prepare volunteers and club members who will be reading in second grade classrooms later this semester.

“It is a perfect way to get involved in the community and give back to even more kids in the area,” said Alley. “Doing this will also give students the chance to gain some community service hours. Putting yourself into situations like this will only help you grow. Today’s society needs more leaders, and becoming a leader requires action.”
