Shawnee State University’s upcoming graduating class in the Dental Hygiene program has received a 100% pass rate on their clinical board examinations, Allied Health Science officials announced.
“These students have accepted every challenge throughout the rigorous two years of dental hygiene and excelled,” SSU Dental Hygiene Director, Georgeann Kamer said. “They are the definition of success. As their faculty and director, they make us proud.”
Students in the Class of 2024 took the Simulated Patient Treatment Clinical Examination (SPTCE) which evaluates candidates on their clinical and judgement skills. Those skills include detection and removal of calculus, accurate periodontal pocket depth measurements, and tissue management.
“This semester we added additional tasks in their clinical course to help prepare them for this clinical board,” SSU Dental Hygiene Clinic Coordinator, Marie Richey said. “I created a mock clinical exam using similar mannequins that the students could practice on, we worked to simulate the board exam in look, feel, and grading style to build their confidence. I am so excited for them to enter the healthcare workforce and am proud of all they have accomplished.”
SSU’s Dental Hygiene program spans five semesters, equipping students for a profession in dental and oral health. Upon completion, graduates are prepared for employment in clinics and private dental practices, to deliver an array of dental and oral services, along with home care guidance and dietary counseling.
