Journalism Minor

Learn to report, write, and edit for real audiences.

Learn reporting and get the experience to prove it on the student newspaper and across campus media.

Why add a Journalism Minor at Shawnee State

Three required courses give you the news-reporting, multimedia, and publication editing foundation you need — and they're built around real writing and editing work, not theory only.

Two electives let you focus on broadcast, public relations, communication practicum, or creative nonfiction.

You can publish on The Chronicle, the student newspaper, while you're a student.

Taught by faculty with media and communication experience, in small classes where they actually see your work.

What you'll study

The minor is 15 credit hours — three required journalism courses (9 credits) and two electives (6 credits) from a list focused on broadcast, PR, communication practicum, and creative nonfiction.

  • Required (9 credits): COMM 2231 News Reporting and Writing; COMM 2232 Multimedia and Narrative Journalism; COMM 2250 Publication Editing and Design
  • Electives (6 credits, choose two): COMM 1105 Intro to Mass Communication; COMM 2275 Radio and Television Journalism; COMM 3300 Public Relations/Communications; COMM 3390 Communication Practicum; COMM 4420 Advanced Public Relations Writing; ENGL 3305 Creative Nonfiction
