Program Overview
Shawnee State University’s Biomedical Sciences Track within the Bachelor of Science in Biology program is designed for students pursuing professional or graduate-level education in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, optometry, pharmacy, chiropractic care, or biomedical research. This track offers a rigorous, research-based foundation in the life sciences, preparing students to meet the academic demands of professional school or advanced study in fields such as molecular biology, physiology, immunology, microbiology, and biotechnology.
Students in this track receive a broad education in core biological concepts while specializing in areas most relevant to medical and research careers. Coursework in anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and biotechnology is supported by intensive study in chemistry, physics, and math. In addition to academic excellence, the program emphasizes critical thinking, scientific reasoning, and practical laboratory skills.
Program Mission
The mission of the BS Biology: Biomedical Sciences program is to provide Biology majors with high quality, student-centered undergraduate education in the area of biomedical sciences.
In achieving our mission the program:
- Insures that students receive a solid foundation in central fields of Biology while also providing specialized upper-level curricula in the biomedical sciences,
- Fosters undergraduate involvement in scientific research
- Supports the mission of the College of Arts and Sciences to prepare an engaged citizenry
- Produces graduates that possess the preparation and skill needed to obtain employment or pursue a graduate/professional degree in a biomedical sciences field

- Biology curriculum (44-46 credits): Biology Foundation (14), Biology Electives (14-16), Biomedical track courses (16)
- Biomedical track courses: Principles of Anatomy or Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy, Principles of Physiology or Animal Physiology, Microbiology, Biotechnology
- Math and support sciences (33-34 credits) including Organic Chemistry I & II, Biochemistry, and Physics I & II
- General electives (9-12 credits) to reach 120 total credits
