A senior in the Biomedical Sciences (Pre-Med) program at Shawnee State University, transfer student Tiarra Faul has found the university to have opened the door to a world of opportunities for her future career.

Tiarra Faul Pre Med Major

“I feel like with this major I can go to medical school, physician’s assistant school, really anything on the biology track,” she said.

Faul likes how close-knit everything at SSU can be, which makes it easier for her to find a community where she belongs and can get help in her program.

“I can talk to the professors if I need help and I’m able to find other students on campus that are also in my major,” she said. “Being in Pre-Med, we also have a Pre-Med Club that meets twice a month.”

Faul and her classmates have experienced a lot of opportunities to explore the major and prepare themselves for medical school. Students have been able to attend Ohio Medical Education Day (OMED) where they can learn about what medical schools have to offer and admissions procedures for different programs.

“Our program now has a 4+4 program so for incoming freshmen who meet a certain score on the ACT and maintain certain grades, they are able to get into Ohio University’s medical school, which I think is a great opportunity,” Faul said.

SSU’s Pre-Med program offers classes to build a strong foundation in biology, scientific research skills, and hands-on experiences. The program offers an advanced human biology course for students to participate in a human cadaver dissection lab.
