Autonomous systems are in development with promises to revolutionize everything from cars to commerce to government. To be autonomous, systems must sense and extract meaning from their surroundings, and take actions to achieve their goals. This involves a considerable amount of intelligence, and the fields of autonomy and artificial intelligence (AI) are necessarily heavily intertwined. This talk will present a discussion of what is autonomy, what is AI, how they are related, and what the future holds.
Dr. Trevor Bihl is a senior research engineer and program manager at the Air Force Research Laboratory, Sensors Directorate. In this role, Dr. Bihl leads a diverse portfolio of both extramural and intramural R&D efforts in algorithms, autonomous systems, and artificial intelligence. He also holds faculty appointments at Wright State University in both the Department of Biomedical, Industrial & Human Factors Engineering and the Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology (Boonshoft School of Medicine). Dr. Bihl has a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology and BS/MS in Electrical Engineering from Ohio University. He is the author of two engineering textbooks, as well as dozens of journal and conference papers related to AI. He is a senior member of IEEE, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and member and former board member of INFORMS, the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences.
