Teaching Licensure

Teaching Physics lab experiments

Shawnee State has four outstanding degrees in BS Natural Sciences with Teacher Licensure, Grades 7–12 that prepares its graduates for careers in teaching science. This degree is offered in conjunction with the School of Education. Students are assigned a faculty adviser in both departments.

Our program is well-known throughout the area for producing quality teacher education candidates with sound field experience. The program can be combined with a number of minors (Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Physics, Math, ...) to enhance opportunities for employment.

How we stand out

  • SSU students spend 801 hours in the field (significantly more than most university candidates in Ohio) and complete a rigorous curriculum that has resulted in a high placement rate.
  • Our four programs received "National Distinction" during their last NCATE review in 2012.
  • Majors consistently perform well on the required national pedagogical exams.
  • Travel opportunities are available through the School of Education with student teaching positions available in China and Vietnam.
  • Close cooperation between the Natural Sciences faculty and the School of Education has resulted in strong content knowledge delivery and a solid tie with area master teachers who regularly serve as Cooperating Teachers.
  • Given the program's emphasis on action research, students regularly present at the Celebration of Scholarship research conference at SSU as well as at national and regional conferences.
  • The program is guided by dedicated and knowledgeable faculty.

Available concentration areas

Students can choose from one of four concentration areas:

  • BS Natural Sciences; Earth, Life, or Physical Science with Adolescent to Young Adult (Grades 7-12) Licensure
  • BS Natural Sciences, Integrated Science with Adolescent to Young Adult (Grades 7-12) Licensure

Checklists and a sequence of courses for all four of these degrees can be found on the School of Education website.
