Campus Transitions to The State of Ohio’s 100Gbps Broadband Network

SSU completed the transition to Ohio’s ultra high-speed 100Gbps broadband network, on the evening of October 29, 2015. The goal for expansion of this State network to Portsmouth and SSU is to boost academic, research and economic initiatives in Ohio's southern Appalachian region, with a strong focus on the simulation and gaming programs at Shawnee State University.

SSU Network Refresh on Schedule

In February 2013 UIS initiated efforts to upgrade the campus network infrastructure (LAN) comprised of:

  • Enhancing network capacity (bandwidth) to 10 Gigabit at IT core and academic/administrative buildings
  • Implementing Cisco VoIP telephony and Unified Collaboration services
  • Refreshing wireless access point (AP) technology and implementing Identity Services Engine (ISE) for network authentication
  • Implementing NetApp's FAS High Availability storage solution combined with a re-design of the campus network storage architecture, to expand SSU's storage capacity

UIS is working to deploy Cisco’s Unified Collaboration (UC) platform for its integration of real-time services such as instant messaging (chat), presence information, IP telephony, video conferencing, data sharing and call control, with non-real-time communication services such as unified messaging (integrated voicemail, e-mail, SMS and fax).

UIS strives to keep campus-wide systems current with the latest vendor releases, and is committed to planned efforts that communicate a comprehensive schedule for each upgrade effort, as they become available. VoIP Telephony and Unified Collaboration

UIS is working to deploy Cisco’s Unified Collaboration (UC) platform for its integration of real-time services such as instant messaging (chat), presence information, IP telephony, video conferencing, data sharing and call control, with non-real-time communication services such as unified messaging (integrated voicemail, e-mail, SMS and fax). UC is a set of products that provides a consistent Unified user-interface and user-experience across multiple devices and media-types.
