What We Do
Internship and Co-op Opportunities: We are working to connect our Shawnee State students with the regional business community.
We are partnering with our regional businesses and organizations to increase internship and co-op opportunities for our students. This allows our students to apply and extend what they have learned at Shawnee State to gain real-world experience for their resumes. Consequently, they receive a well balanced education that prepares them for the workplace and introduces them to occupations and work places that otherwise might not have been considered as career options.
Workforce Development: We are working to support the needs of our regional business community.
We are partnering with our regional businesses and organizations to provide needed training and commercial services both on and off campus. Local companies work with our faculty members and students to conduct experimental research on campus. In the coming months, our new mobile training unit, made possible by a grant through the Ohio Department of Education's RAPIDS program, will become available to provide area businesses with additive manufacturing services as well as programmable logic controller (PLC) training.
Entrepreneurship: We are working to encourage the creation of new business in our community.
Shawnee State University will be a leader in regional entrepreneurism when our new Innovation Accelerator opens on Chillicothe Street in downtown Portsmouth. Students, faculty mentors, business leaders and community members will meet here to research, collaborate and develop team-building and leadership skills to support local entrepreneurs.
We are a Member of NACCE
Shawnee State University belongs to the National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE). This is a member organization of over 300 community colleges representing nearly 2,000 staff. Presidents, educators, administrators and center directors are focused on inciting entrepreneurship in their community and on their campus.
NACCE has two main goals:
- Empower the college to approach the business of leading a community college with an entrepreneurial mindset; and
- Grow the community college's role in supporting job creation and entrepreneurs in their local ecosystem.
