2009 Shawnee District 14 Science Day
Saturday, March 21, 2009 Shawnee State University Shawnee District 14 Science Day is one of 16 district science competitions sponsored by the Ohio Academy of Science (OAS) and hosted by colleges and universities across the state of Ohio. It annually attracts 200-250 students, grades 5-12, from Adams, Lawrence, Pike, and Scioto counties. It is an avenue for students to develop independent or team scientific research projects. District 14 Science Day is the qualifying competition for students wanting to compete at the state level. Students must receive a superior rating at District Science Day to qualify for an opportunity to compete at State Science Day.

Frequently Asked Questions regarding District 14 Science Day
Who may participate in District 14? Students’ grades 7-12 from Adams, Lawrence, Pike, and Scioto counties are eligible to participate in the Shawnee District 14 Science Day. Fifth and sixth grade students are limited to the BEST 5 or 6 projects from each participating district. Fifth and sixth grade projects will be divided into two broad categories, Life Science and Physical Science.
Are Team research projects allowed at District 14 Science Day? Yes. However, Team projects may consist of no more than 3 students. ALL team members must belong to the same school and same grade brackets (5-6), (7-8), or (9-12), and ALL team members must be present to be judged at District 14 Science Day.
Do I have to participate in my county science fair before coming to the district? No, although your project MUST have been judged at least one time previously, (a local, county or other forum) and have received a SUPERIOR or equivalent rating to be eligible for District Science Day.
Does it cost anything to participate at the District 14 Science Day? Yes, each participating student must pay a $20 registration fee. If you are participating as part of a team, each team member must pay the $20 registration fee. *Fees must be paid when you register. Schools that pay for their student registration fees may send a copy of a purchase order with the student registrations. If fees are not received within 10 days after District Science Day, the school will be invoiced for the number of students registered.
· Many schools in District 14 cover the student cost to register for District Science Day (if in doubt, check with your school science fair coordinator or school administrator).
How Do I Register for District 14 Science Day?
Go to the following link (On-Line Registration) to submit your District Science Day registration information online. Submitting your information on-line will help us get confirmations and other information back to you quicker.
Please note: You MUST complete the District Registration Form, print it and send the completed SIGNED form to the District 14 office along with all other required forms as indicated below.
Students who wish to participate in District 14 Science Day must submit ALL of the following forms, dated and signed.
INCOMPLETE forms WILL NOT be accepted.
1. • District Registration Form (pdf) (Indicate Team or Individual project) (Complete the type-in form on-line, print it out on card stock, sign and date)
2. • Consent & Release Form (pdf) Fill in the on-line form and print it out. The ORIGINAL completed form (signed and dated) will be mailed to the District 14 office.
3. • Abstract (refer to the section on abstracts in the Science Day Standards) Have your English teacher proof. A COPY of your Abstract will be mailed to the District 14 office.
4. • ISEF Form 1: Checklist for Adult Sponsor (Mail a COPY of Form I with your registration form)
5. • ISEF Form 1A: Student Checklist (including Research Plan) (Mail a COPY of Form IA and your Research Plan with your registration form)
6. • ISEF Form 1B: Approval Form (Mail a COPY of Form IB with your registration form)
7. • Additional ISEF Forms may be necessary (Mail COPIES of any additional forms with your registration form) (as required for projects involving human subjects, vertebrate animals, potentially hazardous biological agents, or hazardous chemicals, activities and devices.)
The Rules Wizard

This “wizard” asks a series of questions about your planned project and will provide a list of forms that you need to complete. The Rules Wizard can be accessed from the Science Day Standards or from the ISEF Rules Book.
