Ryan's Rant

Hello all,

It is now spring time and school will be over soon, and summer is just around the corner.  With this in mind please focus on your schoolwork and continue to strive for better grades through the rest of the school year.  This is the time of year that can make or break your G.P.A. for the year if you let up now.

Plans continue on for summer and we are starting to contact places to ensure that we can follow through with all of the ideas that we have.  We will be going over some of these trips with you and your parents on April 9th during the parent meeting here at Shawnee State University.  I hope to see each of you and your parents here that day, if you can make it, I know some of you have ACT that day and we most definitely want you to be there instead of with us.

Additionally, I want to let you know that a member of our staff since the beginning of the program will no longer be with us.  Lori Perry, who has served me, you, and the program well for the last five plus years, has taken another position on campus.  We wish her the best of luck and we know things won’t be the same without her.

I look forward to seeing each of you soon, and I hope you are getting excited about summer.

Sincerely,

Ryan

Bubba's Banter

Hey folks,

It was great to get out and meet all of the new students and check up on all of the old ones during our last round of school visits.   I'm looking forward to the parent meeting on April 9th and I hope each of you are as well.

Things are really starting to gear up on our end of things as we begin to scramble to plan meals, trips, classes, housing, transportation, and various other things that go on behind the scenes you do not even hear about. Think of it this way, we will have somewhere in the neighborhood of 110 meals to cover for 40 students over the course of six weeks.

Seniors, we will be out in May for one final school visit.  If you have a senior picture that you would like to share with the rest of our UBMS family get those to me and we will try to get them posted on the web page.  I just want to encourage each of you to finish the school year on a strong note.

Please remember to check the message board periodically.  The URL is http://p066.ezboard.com/bssuupwardboundmathscience .

For those of you who have had an opportunity to meet Lori Perry over the past couple of years I'm sure she would welcome a word of encouragement from you as she adjusts to her new position.  Her email address is lperry@shawnee.edu.

As one of our esteemed UBMS'ers  whose name shall remain anonymous says,

Love, peace, and chicken grease

Bubba out.

Kendra's Korner

Hey guys,

Spring is in the air, and with it comes the dreaded spring fever. This is the time when the beauty of the weather outside beckons you while you are stuck inside all day. I know at this point, you are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel with school. I also realize how hard it is to stay focused. However, I cannot stress enough to you guys to keep up the good work and keep your grades up. The last days of school are as important as the first. Just hang in there.

With the beginning of my spring fever, I am beginning to look forward to the summer. I, as well as the others in the office, are getting excited about spending the summer with all of you. We have many excited things planned for this summer including many classes, trips, and most importantly, great places to eat. I hope that you all too are getting excited about the summer. If any of you, especially the new students, have questions or concerns about the summer, I urge you to either give us a call or get on the message board and post. The message board is a great way to get to know each other before summer begins and it also allows you to speak with students who have already been through the program. Many times, asking someone who has already experienced it can aide in easing fears.

Again, I urge you all to keep up the hard work and keep your grades up. If you need anything, please give us a call. It is our job to help you! I look forward to seeing all of you on the 9th.

Kendra

Ashley’s Advice

Hey Guys! I hope you are all doing well. The school year is almost over! (YAY!) Keep working hard in school. I know it may seem tempting to slack off. I bet you are all getting excited to be out of school and back here for the summer!

I just got back from Spring Break. It was nice to be able to just stay at home with my family for once, but I was getting a little bored. I was really looking forward to starting the new quarter...especially because I start my education classes!

The staff is working very hard preparing for the summer. I am looking forward to seeing some of you again and meeting the rest for the first time. Until then have fun and study hard!

Homework Assignment

(Remember that it is essential we receive your assignment and that failure to complete assignments will affect your participation status for the summer.)

This assignment may be a little bit different than you have had in the past.  One of the main goals of our program is to stimulate students to think about careers in math or science.  This assignment helps us to move towards that goal.  This assignment may be a little bigger than normal, but this is also a typical assignment that you might see at the college level on a weekly basis.

You must choose a math or science topic that you believe to be very important today, or will be in the next 5-10 years (ex. might be Burt Rattan’s effort to make space flight available to average citizens).  Once you have chosen your topic then find an article from a magazine or journal that pertains to it.

After finding your article please copy it and write a one page summary of the article that includes answers to the following questions:

Why do you believe the article to be important?

What will be the impact upon you?

Is the topic/invention/process practical? ($$$ spent versus gain achieved.)

Is it topic/invention/process relevant to society?

Who benefits?

This assignment must be mailed to the office by April 30, 2005
