Shawnee State University site of Southeast Regional
Academic Quiz Tournament
High school quiz bowl teams met at Shawnee State University
for the Southeast Regional Academic Quiz Bowl competition on
Saturday, April 18.
At the high school level, quiz bowl is a very competitive,
academic activity. Players normally practice at their
schools with questions from all academic subjects and some
questions from current events, sports and popular culture.
Although only four players may be actively competing at any
one time, a team can consist of any number of players.
Tossup questions are worth 10 points each or 15 points if
answered before the power mark, and bonus questions are
worth 30 points each.
“The competition is amazing,” said Cathy Mullins, the
committee executive director for Ohio Academic Competition
and also SSU academic grants officer and assistant to the
Provost. “Quiz Bowl is a great learning experience for the
students and helps many students to become well-rounded
academically.”
The matches are a combination of both individual competition
and team collaboration. There were 14 teams at the regional
competition, three of which came from Scioto County –
Northwest, New Boston and Portsmouth.
The winning team was from Upper Arlington High School, and
the runner-up team was from Fisher Catholic High School in
Lancaster. Both teams competed in state tournaments on
Saturday, May 2. Upper Arlington did not place at state
level, however, Fisher Catholic took third runner up.

Shawnee State
University students and faculty plan trip to Rwanda
In conjunction with a special topics course for
summer session at Shawnee State University, “African
Literature,” several students will be going to Rwanda with
Shannon Lawson, assistant professor of English and
Humanities, who received a grant for the special trip.
“The trip will enhance student understanding of the context
in which African literature is written,” Lawson said. “It
also will provide students with cultural enrichment, and an
opportunity to develop appreciation for the creative and
performing arts.”
Two of the tour stops are specifically designed so that
students can meet with the English faculty and literature
students at KIE, a university in Kigali and with high school
literature teachers at Sonrise, a high school with a strong
American influence.
Students will have an opportunity to see Rwanda’s
traditional dance by children at the ubusabane party and
they will be invited to join the adults dancing in the Batwa
community.
Rwanda is an African country recovering from the devastating
effects of the genocide of 1994.
“While 60 percent of the population live in extreme poverty
on less than $1 a day, there is a strong spirit of hope
among the people,” Lawson said. “I think the discussions
with students in Rwanda will be of particular benefit to our
students as it will enhance their understanding of the
literature. This trip will enable students to not only study
African culture but also to ‘live it’ for a short time.”

Shawnee
State University Security and Facilities moves into newly
remodeled offices
The Office of Security and the Facilities Office at Shawnee
State University recently moved into newly remodeled offices
behind the Advanced Technology Center.
“The building
definitely provides sufficient room for all 50 or more
members to meet at once,” said Beth Rockwell, facilities
representative. “The Facilities Office is also
handicapped-accessible now which I feel is a positive
addition.”
The new
offices provide each department with more room and a more
accessible location.
“Not only do
we have more room, the Security Office is much easier to
find on campus,” said Brian Yerardi, SSU security officer.
Both
departments feel that the new location of their offices is
much better for everyone on campus.

Students
Explore Careers in Science, Technology, Engineering,
Mathematics and Foreign Language
Shawnee State University, Ohio University and the
University of Rio Grande are collaborating to present the
Southern Ohio Youth Regents Science, Technology,
Engineering, Mathematics and Foreign Language Academy with
47 high school juniors and seniors accepted this year. The
students will earn free college credits while still in high
school with a summer experience on the three campuses.
Students will have the opportunity to learn about careers,
especially teaching, in the areas of science, technology,
engineering, mathematics and foreign language. The academy
is an intense three-week experience choosing one or two
college courses with up to seven credit hours during the
academy.
The students will arrive for the first week on June 7 at the
University of Rio Grande with an opening dinner that evening
for students, parents and invited guests.
After the residential experience, coursework will be
completed online, using multiple distance-learning
technologies and a one year follow-up class in addition to
an optional elective course during the 2010 spring semester.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn about
potential STEM careers while experiencing three college
campuses and earning college credits,” said Judy Meeker,
project director of the STEM academy at SSU’s University
Outreach Services.
Applicants are admitted based on a number of criteria,
including grade level, GPA, teacher recommendation, essays
and other information provided.
The college courses are General Chemistry, Principles of
Statistics, Elementary Spanish and Introduction to
Education.
“The program is completely free to students who qualify and
students do not need to be gifted to attend,” Meeker said.
“Many of the participants are average students with high
potential who are capable of doing college level work.”
The academy is a third-year grant focusing on Appalachia
Ohio and funded through the Ohio Board of Regents. This
year’s grant is about $276,000 and SSU is one of eight STEM
Academies across the state of Ohio.

Strickland appoints Shawnee
State University junior to Board of Trustees
Governor Ted Strickland appointed a new student member to
the Shawnee State University Board of Trustees, pre-med
junior Mallory Saltsman, of Wellston. Her two-year term will
begin July 1, 2009.
“Having students on our Board of Trustees helps ensure that
all decisions are made with the student perspective
represented,” SSU President Rita Rice Morris said. “Mallory
joins Carrie Dunham, a student Trustee member who has
completed one year on the Board. These two students are
wonderful representatives of the student body.”
Saltsman says that a student trustee on the board last year
encouraged her to apply for the position and she looks
forward to the opportunities that will come with the
appointment.
“I was hesitant at first, but the more I learned about the
board, the more I became sure of my ability to serve on it,”
she said.
Saltsman is a member of the SSU Pre-Med Club and volunteers
with the American Cancer Society and helps with the annual
Relay For Life.
She came to Shawnee State after attending one year at the
Ohio State University.
“Once at Shawnee, my grades improved and I've met a lot of
truly great people here,” she said. “I've never met a more
welcoming and friendly group of people than the residents of
southern Ohio.”
When Saltsman was in high school, she developed her
leadership talents as captain of the marching band’s Flag
Corps, participated in the National Honor Society, Drama
Club and in the start up of an anti-drug organization,
LAUNCH, a non-profit youth organization in Jackson County.
“Through this organization, I have performed many, many
hours of community service,” Saltsman said.
In the first program, she surveyed local businesses and
community establishments to ascertain opportunities for the
youth in the area for jobs, internships and social
activities.
Other activities included Project Protect Your Pills,
educating people on the dangers of prescription drugs.
Saltsman also made greeting cards and visited the elderly in
nursing homes, organized social events, such as dances and
weekend retreats for youth in the county, and attended the
PRIDE anti-drug youth conference in both Washington D.C. and
Cincinnati.
“I continue my participation in the LAUNCH program as a
college student, however, my role now differs,” Saltsman
said. “I often act as a chaperone for the events I once
planned and continue to work with current high school
students to develop performances reflecting the
organization’s anti-drug and alcohol mission.”
Her goal for the future is to follow in the footsteps of her
mentor and hero, Dr. Douglas Jones. Saltsman would like to
attend the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine
following completion of the biomedical sciences degree at
SSU, then return to southern Ohio to practice family
medicine in a small community.

Professor and Students Present Papers at a National
Conference in New Orleans
Dr. Darren Harris-Fain, professor in English and Humanities,
along with two Shawnee State University students, Rebecca
Cox and Jessamyn Sudhakaran, presented papers at the Popular
Culture Association and American Culture Association
National Conference in New Orleans in April.
One of the missions of the PCA/ACA is to support the study
of popular and American culture and also to support new and
established scholars in both their research and teaching,
among other things.
Exhibits, film screenings, special sessions and tours were
available at the four-day conference.
Cox presented a paper on masculinity in the novel “Fight
Club” by Chuck Palahniuk and Sudhakaran’s paper was on
analyzing the movie, “Meet Me in St. Louis,” as a product of
WWII.
Harris-Fain presented a paper on two graphic novels
published in the 1950s explaining why they were not
successful.
Hundreds of different presentations were scheduled at the
conference. Topics at the conference included Academics and
Collegiate Culture, African-American Culture, Border Culture
(Political, Cultural and Geographical), British Popular
Culture, Digital Culture, Aging and Senior Culture, American
Indian Culture, Comics, Appalachian Studies, American
Literature, Asian Popular Culture and many, many more.
One documentary presented was “The New Orleans Tea Party”
covering the rebuilding of post-Katrina civil society,
directed and edited by Marline Otte, associate professor of
history at Tulane University, New Orleans, and Laszlo Fulop,
assistant professor in the Film Department at the University
of New Orleans.
Harris-Fain attended a special session with three people
from “Sesame Street,” who presented the history of the show
and included some behind the scenes information. The
presentation traced the evolution of “Sesame Street” using
video and still images.
“It is a great opportunity to find out about a wide variety
of topics,” Harris-Fain said. “This is one of the few
national conferences that allow undergraduates to present
but they are selective. They received 60 applications from
undergraduates and only accepted 19 students and two of
those students were from Shawnee State.”

retires at Shawnee State University
John Lorentz, history professor and director of the Center
for International Programs and Activities (CIPA), retired
from Shawnee State University as a history professor. He
will be concentrating on his position with CIPA.
Lorentz has been with SSU since 1990 as an associate
professor, professor, core coordinator and director of the
Center for Integrated Studies and as director of CIPA.
He has an undergraduate degree from Miami University, a
master’s degree in Middle Eastern Studies from Harvard
University and a Ph.D. from Princeton University. Lorentz
lived for more than five years in the Middle East, mostly in
Iran.
He is fluent in reading, writing and speaking Persian and
has a reading knowledge of Arabic and French.
Lorentz has been a consultant on Middle East affairs and an
executive director of American Aid for Afghans. He has
worked for 38 years as a teacher and administrator in
several universities. In his teaching career, he has
received several awards for distinguished teaching at both
the local and state-wide levels.
Lorentz is author of the “Historical Dictionary of Iran,”
now in its second printing. He presented the book in 1995 at
a major national conference in Boston on the Middle East.
The book is nearly 500 pages and covers the entire spread of
Iranian history going back almost 3,000 years. The book is
organized like a dictionary.
“The primary focus of the book is on the 19th and 20th
centuries,” Lorentz said. “I have written a lot of the
contemporary history. The Iranian history is incredibly rich
and deep.”
Lorentz also published numerous papers and co-authored the
book “Iranians” in “The Harvard Encyclopedia of American
Ethnic Groups” in 1980. He and his son, Nathan, worked
together to film an hour-long documentary, “River Voices:
Portrait of an American River Community,” about the 1937
flood in the Ohio River Valley that premiered in 2002 on
PBS.
“When I came to Shawnee State, I made a commitment to myself
that as long as things are moving forward advancing and
developing as a university, I will stay here for the rest of
my career,” Lorentz said. “I feel very proud when I look
around campus and to know what it was and how far we have
come and how well we have done in establishing ourselves as
a true university, it is quite remarkable. That is a very
significant reward for me.”
