Shawnee State University offers seminars for MRDD professionals

(MRDD professionals have the opportunity to earn college credits or continuing education credits through the Principles of Work and Principles of Group Facilitation seminars offered at Shawnee State University)

Shawnee State University Outreach Services and Department of Teacher Education will have Principles of Work and Principles of Group Facilitation seminars for individuals employed as mental retardation and developmental disabilities professional or anyone interested in vocational rehabilitation during the months of June and July in Room 211 in Massie Hall.
“This series provides a wonderful opportunity for MRDD professionals to receive excellent education and training that will benefit them on the job,” said Ginnie Moore, director of University Outreach Services.
The Principle of Work seminar is a 30-hour seminar focusing on the history of services for individuals with developmental disabilities in Ohio and the United States, ranging from large state-run institutions or developmental centers to sheltered work environments to community employments. Various models of community employment will be investigated, such as sheltered employment, job coaching and governmental incentives. Related services, such as residential supports and Medicaid funding for waiver recipients will also be reviewed.
Principles of Group Facilitation seminar is also a 30-hour seminar and it focuses on how the MRDD organizational system operates, what benefits a team approach would make and why top-down approaches do not always work effectively. It will explore team membership and behavior and developing skills to facilitate team meetings. Strategies will be presented to develop new methods of management and acquire problem-solving skills.
Participants will be able to earn continuing education credits, undergraduate college credits or graduate college credits.
Roger Kemper will be the instructor of the seminars. He has been employed by the Pike County Board of Developmental Disabilities in a variety of positions, from early intervention supervisor, principal of the School for Child Advancement and habilitation assistant superintendent. Kemper also serves as adjunct instructor in special education at SSU where he teaches program courses in the area of moderate to intensive disabilities.
The cost of each seminar will be $485 for the graduate course and $225 for the continuing education course.
For more information or to register, contact the SSU Outreach Services at (740) 351-3274 or toll free at (866) 672-8778.

Shawnee State University students and faculty to run at the 2008 Relay for Life

(Two teams representing Shawnee State University will be running at the 2008 Relay for Life)

Shawnee State University’s Respiratory Therapy program and Sharon Messer, secretary of Natural Science, will have teams running in the 2008 Relay for Life race at the Scioto County Fairgrounds in Lucasville beginning June 20 to represent SSU.
Both students and faculty members will comprise the Respiratory Therapy program’s group and Messer’s group will consist of friends from SSU and family members.
“I think this is a wonderful opportunity to promote Relay for Life and inform people of what it is about,” Messer said.
Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature activity. It offers the community an opportunity to raise funds for the fight against cancer by having teams of people camp out and take turns walking or running on the track or path. Each team is asked to have at least one representative on the track during the 24-hour relay.
The race will start at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 20 and end at 12 p.m. on Saturday, June 21 at the fairgrounds. Food booths, a yard sale and an auction will be available Saturday at the fairgrounds.
“I’ve never attended this event before but I am excited to be able to do it this year with my team because as a cancer survivor myself, I believe it is important to make people aware of the different aspects of cancer survival,” Messer said.

Shawnee State University provides dental hygiene to uninsured community

(Students at Shawnee State University provide teeth cleaning, x-rays and other dental hygiene services at a very low cost)

Anyone without dental insurance who needs dental hygiene services can find those services at Shawnee State University at very low costs.
The services include scaling and polishing teeth, dental x-rays, application of fluoride, application of pit and fissure sealants, patient education, nutritional counseling and periodontal irrigation with chemotherapeutic agents.
“Patients also will be instructed on both the prevention of disease and maintenance of oral health,” said Nancy Bentley, associate professor and program leader at SSU. “We will refer a patient who has dental needs that we don’t provide to other healthcare providers.”
The time involved may be longer than at a traditional dental office and the patient may have to return for a second visit. However, for a family that does not have dental insurance, the cost is very reasonable.
For adults and children, the fee is $10, regardless of the number of visits to complete treatment. For Shawnee State University students, the fee is $5. Fluoride treatment is provided at no charge and pit and fissure sealants are $7 per tooth or $20 for three or more teeth.
After the initial cleaning and examination, the Dental Clinic will send a reminder to the patients every six months.
“Although x-rays are provided at no cost, there are additional charges if we have to send the x-rays to their dentist,” Bentley said.
About 20 students graduate each year from the Dental Hygiene program.
The program can be completed in five semesters and students will receive an associate’s degree. After the training, students take national boards and a regional examination to become licensed as a dental hygienist.
“Nationally, there is a huge demand for dental hygienists in communities that are considered underserved,” she said. “In this immediate area, the demand is not that high, but our employment rate in southern Ohio is very good.”
For more information about the program or to make an appointment at the SSU Dental Clinic, call (740) 351-3236.

The Department of Teacher Education at Shawnee State University scheduled for accreditation

(SSU’s Department of Education and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education invite comments on the quality of professional education programs for 2008 accreditation)

The Department of Teacher Education at Shawnee State University is scheduled for a fall semester 2008 accreditation review by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Federal regulations require that accrediting agencies allow for public comment on the qualifications of institutions or programs under consideration for first accreditation or continuing accreditation.
Both NCATE and Shawnee State University recognize graduates, parents, schools and community organizations have valuable perspectives on the quality of the programs that prepare teachers and other school personnel.
Comments must address substantive matters related to the quality of professional education programs offered at Shawnee State University, and should specify the respondent’s relationship, if any, to the institution (i.e., graduate, present or former faculty member, employer of graduates). Copies of all correspondence received will be sent to Shawnee State University for comment before the review. No anonymous testimony will be considered.
SSU invites interested parties to submit written testimony on the Department of Teacher Education at SSU to the Board of Examiners, NCATE, 2010 Massachusetts Ave. NW, Suite 500, Washington, D.C. 20036-1023 or by email to callforcomments@ncate.org.

Professor emeritus at Shawnee State University invited to be keynote speaker at seminar in Malaysia

(Dr. Hagop Pambookian, professor emeritus at Shawnee State University, invited to be keynote speaker at the second Convention of the Asian Psychology Association in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia)

Dr. Hagop Pambookian, professor emeritus at Shawnee State University, has been invited to speak at the second Asian Psychological Association (APsyA) Convention in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on June 27 to 28.
Pambookian has served with distinction for nearly 40 years in higher education and has been recognized internationally for his contributions to the field of psychology. In 2001, he received the Distinguished Achievement Award from the American Psychological Association. He helped establish the psychology degree at Shawnee State University and developed many of the courses used for that major. Pambookian served as the campus representative for the Fulbright program and was instrumental in forging a cooperation and exchange agreement with Russia's Novgorad State University. In a resolution in 2005, Shawnee State University bestowed the title of professor emeritus on Pambookian.
He has been a keynote speaker and lecturer and he has attended many conferences in different parts of the world. In September 2007, he was an invited delegate at the first world conference on research integrity in Lisbon, Portugal, organized by the United States Office of Research Integrity and the European Science Foundation.
Pambookian’s talk at the APsyA in Malaysia will be “Psychology Around the World: The Asian Experience.”
“There is so much to cover but I’m going to sensitize them to some basic issues dealing with psychology,” Pambookian said. “My talk will address the Asian experience since there are significant differences in the psychology of Asia from the Western world. I’m honored to be invited as a keynote speaker at this convention.”
According to APsyA, the organization is intended to accommodate the interests of interdisciplinary, cross-cultural and interethnic psychologists who will try to develop the Asian psychological school and paradigm, to comprehend and to deal with the unique Asian culture.
The theme of the Convention is “Building Asian Families and Communities in the 21st Century.” Families are a significant part of the Asian culture and the convention will be a way for psychologists to share developments in research and practice in Asia.

Shawnee State University graduate Charles Haskins opens art show

(Charles Haskins along with four family members collaborated on an art exhibit showing at Shawnee State University)

Charles Haskins II, a 2008 graduate of Shawnee State University, along with his father, Charles Sr., mother, Karen, and two brothers John and Travis, opened their first family art show on Friday, May 30 in the Appleton Gallery at the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts.
The exhibit shows the uniqueness of a family’s commitment to art and the life-long creativity and imagination of the Haskins family.
“When our work was hung up, the connections to each other and each other’s work became visible to me,” said Haskins. “I saw my brother’s work related to mine and how my subject was rooted in my father’s work.”
The show has taken several years to prepare and it is the first time the Haskins family has worked as a team to put an art show together.
“I believe the exhibit offers a unique and one-of-a-kind glimpse of a family working together in the arts,” Haskins said.
The Haskins family exhibit will be displayed in the Appleton Gallery until June 30. The gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is free to the public.

Shawnee State University’s Vern Riffe Center for the Arts and Southern Ohio Performing Arts Association announce the 2008-2009 season

(Shawnee State University and SOPAA announces the upcoming events for the 2008-2009 season)

Shawnee State University’s Vern Riffe Center for the Arts and the Southern Ohio Performing Arts Association announces the schedule for the 2008-2009 season.
“This is a great line-up of shows for the next season,” said Carl Daehler, executive director of the VRCFA. “It has something for everyone and many family-friendly programs. We expect a great response from our subscribers and the public.”
Ten shows have been lined up starting September 18 with the performance by Cherryholmes, a family group that promises to offer an exciting brand of Bluegrass with a contemporary twist. The group was recently honored with their second Grammy Award nomination for their latest album release, “Cherryholmes II, Black and White.”
On October 16, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra returns for the third time under the direction of Junichi Hirokami. He will conduct the acclaimed orchestra in a concert featuring Igor Stravinsky’s “The Firebird,” Ralph Vaughan-Williams’ “Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus” and Tchaikovsky’s “Serenade for Strings.”
On December 8, the Canadian Brass will perform a holiday concert including works from Bach, Purcell, Glenn Miller and Fats Waller. They have been featured on “The Tonight Show”, “Today”, “Entertainment Tonight” and numerous PBS special programs.
On January 2, a performance of the legendary “Sweeny Todd,” a “demon barber” set on revenge who takes up with his neighbor in a delicious plot to “slice” their way through England’s upper crust, will come to life on the VRCFA stage. On February 5, The BalletMet of Columbus will perform the groundbreaking fusion of dance and music in “Jazz Moves.” The electrifying program features commissioned dance works and music by renowned artists from around the country that touch on legendary figures of the 1950s and the unstoppable energy of today’s artists.
The Broadway show, “The Drowsy Chaperone,” will be performed on March 1. It all starts when a die-hard musical-theater fan plays his favorite cast album on his turntable and the musical literally bursts into life in his living room and on stage. It is a tale filled with mobsters and marriages, movie moguls and monkeys, sweethearts and songs, and Latin Lotharios with lavish dance numbers.
Then on March 24, The Romeros will be performing. They have been called, “The Royal Family of the Guitar,” because of the beauty of their artistry and passage of talent from generation to generation. Today, the group represents Romero’s third generation of continuing in tradition of excellence.
“To Kill a Mockingbird,” comes to the VRCFA stage on April 7. The play is based on Harper Lee’s classical novel of Atticus Finch, a white lawyer and father, defending a black man.
On April 21, “Hairspray,” the winner of eight Tony Awards will be performed on the stage of the VRCFA. This splashy musical features Tracy Turnblad, who dreams to dance on the popular Corny Collins Show, and is transformed from a social outcast to a sudden TV star.
The Ohio State University’s Men’s Glee Club, under the direction of Dr. Robert J. Ward, will perform on May 5 with music that has been shared by the OSU campus and community since 1875. The group has actively tailgated at home football games, performed concerts on and off campus and has made frequent concert trips both in the United States and abroad.
Discounts are available for seniors and SSU students, faculty, staff and alumni. Also, receive ten shows for the price of nine. With the purchase of a full season subscription, a ticket for the play “To Kill a Mockingbird” will be included at no extra charge. Subscription renewals will be accepted until July 7 and single tickets will go on sale starting August 25.
Beginning July 1, all ticketed VRCFA events will be available for sale on Ticketmaster’s world-wide Internet and ticket outlet sales network. When using the Ticketmaster services, additional Ticketmaster charges may be added to the cost of the ticket.
For more information, contact the McKinley Box Office at (740) 351-3600, or visit info@vrcfa.org or www.sopaa.org.

Pratt named new security chief at Shawnee State University

(Robert Pratt, retired Portsmouth police detective, named new security chief at Shawnee State University)

Robert Pratt, of Portsmouth, has been named the new security chief at Shawnee State University bringing more than 30 years service in law enforcement to the university.
Pratt retired from the Portsmouth Police Department after 27 years service beginning as a patrol officer and retiring as captain of the Detective Division. He then accepted a position as assistant superintendent of the Scioto County Juvenile Detention Center and began a security program for Portsmouth Metropolitan Housing Authority before coming to the university.
“I grew up here in Portsmouth and I saw what this used to be and how it evolved into the beautiful campus that it is,” Pratt said. “When I saw this job available, I knew this would be a great opportunity and I knew they wanted to accelerate their security program here on campus. Everyone here has been so fantastic and welcoming.”
Pratt has an associate’s degree in law enforcement technology and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, both from Ohio University. He is also a graduate of Northwestern University School of Staff and Command through the Traffic Institute, comparable to the national FBI academy.
“Our goal is to have a safe environment at the university for our students, faculty, staff and our guests,” he said. “We have 12 security officers and provide 24-hour service to the university. We are looking to expand programs and additional training for our officers.”
On Friday, June 13, six of the security officers attended training at the Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy in London, Ohio, and in August, six officers will be attending campus security training in Cincinnati.
The SSU Security office provides a 24-hour escort service for anyone on campus who needs an escort to their vehicles or dormitory. They provide parking passes and assist in many of the campus activities.
A new program in cooperation with the Portsmouth Police Department called ICE (In Case of Emergency) will provide people who have cell phones a way for security officers or first responders to easily find their emergency contacts. Call the Campus Security office at (740) 351-3232 for more information.
“We just want to provide the best service we can to the university community,” Pratt said.

Aqua aerobics offered fall semester at Shawnee State University

(Gain the same benefits of any exercise program with water aerobics at Shawnee State University)

Exercising in water is known to offer the same benefits as any exercise program but with less stress on muscles and joints. Shawnee State University is offering aqua aerobics fall semester with Instructor Lois Rase teaching the class.
Swimming skills are not required since the exercise is in shallow water. According to experts, a person can gain the same benefits as any other exercise program and it is safe. Aqua aerobics exercise is known to reduce the risk of muscle and joint injury also.
Aquatic exercise not only enhances your cardiovascular fitness, but it can improve your muscular endurance and overall strength.
“You will be able to perform tasks that you could not imagine doing on land,” Rase said. “Picture yourself doing 100 jumping jacks. This can be done very easily in the water.”
Flotation devices will be used to place less stress on the joints when stretching and it allows greater range of motion. From 450 to 700 calories are burned in a one-hour water aerobics session.
Rase is a professional member of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. She is Red Cross Certified in water safety, swim instruction and life guard training.
The class (SSPE 1129-01) will be Monday and Wednesday from noon to 12:50 p.m. in the Natatorium of the James L. Rhodes Athletic Center. The first day of the fall semester is Aug. 26. For more information, call the Office of the Registrar at (740) 351-3403 or register in person at the office in the University Center, second floor.

Shawnee State’s AmeriCorp/VISTA service leader helps Bike and Build riders

(Kelly Hatas finds shelter for Bike and Build riders traveling across the country to raise money for affordable housing planned by young adults)

When Kelly Hatas, AmeriCorps/VISTA service leader at Shawnee State University, received an e-mail from Rita Haider, administrative assistant for SSU’s Center for International Programs and Activities, that a non-profit organization would be biking through Portsmouth and needed a place to stay, she began looking for a place where they could stay and have dinner and breakfast.
With the help of Diana Michael, secretary for All Saints Episcopal Church, Hatas found a place where they could stay at the church that also had a spaghetti dinner for the group, showers at Shawnee State University, and breakfast early the next morning before they traveled into Kentucky on their long journey to California.
The Bike and Build cyclists came into Portsmouth on Thursday, June 19, with 31 cyclists between the ages of 18 and 25, mostly college students and a few graduates. The students began their long journey in Providence, Rhode Island and each rider had to raise a minimum of $4,000 to make the trip. Bike & Build allocates the majority of the proceeds from the events through either pre-arranged contributions or a competitive grant application process. Seven different riding groups were traveling cross country from different locations hoping to raise nearly $500,000 to help build homes. Proceeds from the Bike and Ride events are disbursed to affordable housing organizations mainly planned and executed by young adults in the 18 to 25 age group.

Shawnee State University to offer associate of technical study degree program

(Chancellor Fingerhut approves associate of technical study degree program at Shawnee State University allowing students already working in the field a chance to upgrade their knowledge and skills)

Shawnee State University will be offering an associate of technical study degree program starting fall semester of 2008.
An associate of technical study provides students an opportunity to develop a tailor-made program of instruction which may include already learned skills, life experiences and course credits from appropriate trade schools, career centers, colleges and universities.
“For example, students will be able to obtain an A.T.S. in computer technology or in electrical craft technology because the degree is built to specialize in the student’s field of work,” said Carl Hilgarth, professor and chairperson of the Department of Industrial and Engineering Technologies.
Admission requirements will adhere to the full admission requirements of SSU. Students will be advised and counseled in a program that matches the student’s interest and aptitude, and high school records, equivalency exams and English and mathematic course placement test scores will be evaluated upon application.
Graduation requirements for the A.T.S. degree program will adhere to the same requirements of any technical program at SSU. A minimum of 60 semester credit hours of work with 19 semester credit hours in general education, 12 semester credit hours in industrial and engineering technology core courses and 30 semester credit hours in industrial and engineering technology studies are required.
“The benefit of this program is to give students who are already working in the field a chance to upgrade their skills and knowledge and it also benefits employers who are seeking more qualified workers,” Hilgarth said.
The program was approved by Chancellor Fingerhut on January 21.
For more information, contact Hilgarth at (740) 351-3595 or e-mail at chilgarth@shawnee.edu.

Shawnee State University protects the environment by participating in the Scioto County Habitat for Humanity Ink and Toner Cartridge Recycling Fundraiser

(Shawnee State University has collected $898.50 from ink and toner cartridge collections for Habitat for Humanity’s Ink and Toner Cartridge Recycling Fundraiser)

Shawnee State University helps in saving the environment with its participation in the Scioto County Habitat for Humanity Ink and Toner Cartridge Recycling Fundraiser.
Habitat is a non-profit Christian housing organization that seeks to provide decent, affordable housing for those in need. The goal of the fundraiser is to encourage people to donate and collect used ink and toner cartridges, and in return, Cartridge World will send a check to Habitat for the collection.
“I think this is a great project because it is a community project and 90 percent of the funds are used locally to build affordable housing,” said Kelly Hatas, AmeriCorps/VISTA service leader, who is on the Habitat board and the recycling subcommittee chair.
The program started several years ago at SSU, and from July 1, 2006 to July 1, 2007, SSU earned $335, but since December of 2007, SSU has earned $898.50. SSU is also working with an international company, Cartridge World, in Grandview, Ohio to collect more cartridge donations.
“The cartridges are recycled in the classic sense of the word. They are not melted down to create other products. They are refilled and resold right at Cartridge World, keeping more than 2,000 ink cartridges from landfills,” Hatas said.
In Scioto County, drop off sites are the Life Center in Portsmouth, Lucasville and Wheelersburg, Portsmouth Library locations in New Boston, Northwest, South Webster, Wheelersburg and Lucasville, Market Street Café in Portsmouth, Dr. Pettit’s Office, Scioto County Sheriff and many others.
For more information or to get a collection box for inks and toner cartridges, contact Hatas at (740) 351-4993 or visit www.sciotohabitat.org.
