NCATE examines Shawnee State University’s Department of Teacher Education program for accreditation

The National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education has examined the Department of Teacher Education program at Shawnee State University for the first time since the department was accredited in 2002.

Teacher Education has gone through several phases of approval over the years. The department was first approved in 1992 by the Ohio Department of Education to prepare teachers and later approved by ODE and the Ohio Board of Regents to offer degrees and licensure programs for teachers under new standards in 1998. After the approval of new programs, Teacher Education sought NCATE accreditation. NCATE is a non-profit, non-governmental alliance of 33 national professional education and public organizations to accredit universities. SSU received the initial NCATE accreditation in 2002.

“NCATE accreditation is the premier accreditation of Teacher Education programs in the United States,” said Paul Madden, associate professor and chair of Teacher Education at SSU. “It provides recognition that we’ve gone through an external board review and when compared to other institutions on a national scale, we meet the same standards as every other institution that has achieved this accreditation.”
NCATE sets six standards in the department as a guide:

  • Candidates must demonstrate the content knowledge and the classroom teaching ability and skills to be successful teachers;

  • Assessment system to collect data on the performance of candidates and the program;

  • Field experiences early in the teacher program;

  • Diversity issues related to students and faculty at the university and to students and teachers in K-12 grades;

  • Faculty standards and what degrees the faculty holds; and

  • Resources that the university has allocated for the teacher program, including faculty, technology and library resources, among others.

A Board of Examiners made up of five people from throughout the country, a faculty union member and one representative from the Ohio Department of Education meet on campus for five days to determine eligibility of the university’s program. Every seven years, the department will go through re-accreditation from NCATE.

“The students at SSU can go anywhere in the country and apply to any school district and even if the school has not heard about SSU, they will recognize the NCATE accreditation,” Madden said. “NCATE means a lot to students when they graduate. It helps them in a job search on a national scale.”

The visiting Board of Examiners team has recommended the accreditation of SSU’s Teacher Education program to the NCATE Board but it will be several months for the final approval from NCATE’s Unit Accreditation Board.

Locally, SSU’s Teacher Education program has contracts with 50 schools in Southern Ohio and Northern Kentucky where the students will go for student teaching.

Students go to the early grades, middle school and high school in the student teaching program. They must complete between 718 to 827 hours of professional field and clinical hours during their preparation program and at least 450 hours of student teaching before licensure recommendation.
The first international student teaching experience was spring semester 2008 with four candidates teaching in China.

Shawnee State University plans Christmas event with 14th Street Community Center

Shawnee State University’s AmeriCorps-Vista is sponsoring a “Christmas on 14th Street” event from 2 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13, at the 14th Street Community Center.

Fifty SSU students will “adopt” a child for the day and come prepared with a small gift for the child. The day will consist of playing games, making crafts, a Christmas tree lighting, dinner and St. Nick.

“I think that this will be a neat and fun volunteer experience for both the students and the children,” said Sarah Lowe, AmeriCorps/Vista representative. “It’s also a great event to connect SSU with our community.”

Individuals who are not available on that day may help by donating outdoor Christmas lights, extension cords, tree decorations, general Christmas decorations, sugar cookie dough, icing and sprinkles, small gifts and prizes, hats, gloves and scarves. Items may be dropped off at the Organization Suite in the University Center, or they may be picked up by the AmeriCorps/Vista representatives if notified ahead of time.

Individuals interested in donating or need more information may contact Lowe at (740) 351-3662 or email at slowe@shawnee.edu or Kelly Hatas at (740) 351-3572 or email at khatas@shawnee.edu.

Fraternity at Shawnee State University raises money for wheelchair

One day on his way to class at Shawnee State University, a wheel fell off student Justin Gavet’s wheelchair. After eight years and several repairs, he is still riding in the same wheelchair. Gavet has been at the university for six years and he is a history major.
To help Gavet purchase a new wheelchair, some of his friends in the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity are having a Christmas raffle.
“I’ve known Justin since he was my roommate in 2005 and he has been needing a wheelchair for a long time,” said Joshua Newton. “But because of tuition and living expenses, he has not been able to afford to buy one.”
Newton talked to his fraternity brothers about Gavet’s predicament and they decided that this year for a service project, they were going to concentrate on raising money to buy him a new wheelchair.
“We will be doing as many fundraisers as possible until we have enough money to buy him a wheelchair,” Newton said.
The cost of a new wheelchair is about $1,500. The first fundraiser is a raffle for a $75 gift card for Wal-Mart. Tickets will be sold at the University Center until Christmas break from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5.
Donations are also accepted and can be sent to Tau Kappa Epsilon, c/o Shawnee State University, 940 Second Street, Portsmouth, OH 45662. Checks or money orders can be made out to Tau Kappa Epsilon. Any extra proceeds will go to fraternity expenses. For information, call James Morgan at (740) 464-7430.

Santa arrives at the Dr. Miller and Genevieve Toombs Children’s Learning Center at Shawnee State University

Children were excited to see Santa at the Dr. Miller and Genevieve Toombs Children’s Learning Center on Wednesday, Dec. 10. After Santa had each child sit on his lap and talk about what they wanted for Christmas, he gave each child a gift and he sang Christmas songs along with the children, staff and visitors.
Each child received a gift from Santa and one boy, Garrett Koverman, brought Santa a gift of peanuts and money. The money was to help Santa buy his Christmas presents because they were expensive, he said when he gave Santa a plastic bag filled with some coins he had saved.
The CLC is a full day university/community preschool licensed by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services with the distinction of being the first nationally accredited program in Scioto County by the National Association for the Education of Young Children in 2004.
With a staff of degreed teachers and university student teaching assistants enrolled full-time in degree-track programs, the Center provides diverse and fully integrated environments to develop young children's minds and transform self-directed, lifelong early learners into lifelong learners. Play is the work of young children, and the Ohio Department of Education early learning content standards are implemented through a developmentally appropriate curriculum that provides opportunities for discovery, exploration and experimentation.

Ohio Children’s Foundation donates money for playground to Shawnee State University’s Development Foundation

The Ohio Children’s Foundation has donated $86,000 to Shawnee State University’s Development Foundation to use in building a playground at the Dr. Miller and Genevieve Toombs Children’s Learning Center.
The money was donated in 2006 and distributed over a three-year period to support playground expansion, after-school programming and regional field trips. The playground is being developed in three phases with two phases completed in December 2007.
The grant provided scholarships for after-school learning opportunities for children; supported 12 field trips for children attending the Children's Learning Center; and for Phase II construction of the playground at the CLC. The grant covered costs of removing old alley paving, grading, extending the fence and property, and installing part of the storm bridge system.
The second phase increased the size of the playground and reconfigured the tricycle trail to include the addition of pedestrian walkways, parking spaces for tricycles and scooters, a “gas pump,” a large drive-through playhouse and a chute/tunnel/gravel travel center. Outdoor musical instruments are now also available.
The final stage is ready to be completed and will include a garden area and a gazebo. Signage was installed recognizing the Ohio Children’s Foundation two weeks ago.
“What a wonderful place for our children to play and nurture their creativity,” said SSU President Rita Rice Morris. “We are grateful for the funding from the Ohio Children’s Foundation.”
To help raise funds for other needs at the CLC, commemorative tiles are available that are in a mural and on the walls at the center. Each tile is individually designed with the name of a loved one or person to be honored. The tiles are in three sizes with 6 inches by 6 inches at $100 and 8 inches by 8 inches at $1,000. A tile 10 inches by 8 inches can be purchased for someone wanting to name a room.

Vietnam Veterans establish scholarship at Shawnee State University for children and grandchildren

The Vietnam Veterans of American, Chapter 1006, in South Shore, Ky., have created a scholarship for children and grandchildren of Viet Nam Veterans at Shawnee State University.
Applicants for the scholarship must be a child or grandchild of a Vietnam veteran entering the freshman year at SSU, have a GPA of 3.0 or better and demonstrate financial need. The award is a total of $1000 for two academic semesters, $500 given out each semester, and renewable for up to four years as long as the recipient remains in good academic standing.
“We started working on the scholarship the first of the year,” said Emory Wilson, chapter president. “Ed Spencer, membership coordinator from the state VVA in Kentucky, came up from Berea, Ky. to help us. Even though he had bad health, he came up every month to help us.”
Founded in 1978, the Vietnam Veterans of America is the only national Vietnam veteran’s organization congressionally chartered and exclusively dedicated to Vietnam-era veterans and their families. Chapter 1006 in South Shore, established in 2008, is one of the larger chapters with 61 regular members and eight associate members.
“The scholarship fund is being established by a very special group of people, Vietnam veterans,” said Mandy Hart, associate director of SSU’s Development Foundation. “They have dedicated so much to our country, and now, in honor of those who served, they want to create this award and make a difference in the lives of future students.”
To raise money for the scholarship, VVA members are selling raffle tickets for an SR 9 Ruger Pistol that will be drawn in March 2009.
The first scholarship will begin in August 2009 for the fall semester and can be applied for through the FAFSA application at SSU’s Financial Aid Office.

Student photographer presents photo to Congresswoman Jean Schmidt

When Shawnee State University student Sarah Jenkins captured a moment in time for a photography class, she just wanted to honor veterans so they are not forgotten or “Overlooked,” the title of her photo.
“I have friends who are soldiers and I wanted to do something about our soldiers being forgotten and overlooked,” Jenkins said.
She asked a friend who is in the Army National Guard to put on his military suit and go to a cemetery with her to take a photo. They went to Greenlawn Cemetery in Portsmouth, Ohio, where she captured a photo of him kneeling down to look at a World War I soldier’s gravesite.
Since then, her photo has won the Kodak Moment of the Month award and when Congresswoman Jean Schmidt, 2nd Congressional District in Ohio, heard about the photo, she wanted to hang it in her Washington office.
“When I saw that Kodak wanted photos honoring veterans, I decided to enter my photo,” Jenkins said. “The photograph honors our American veterans because it teaches us not to forget them and that they are not overlooked.”
On Monday, Dec. 15, Jenkins presented the photo to Congresswoman Schmidt at Schmidt’s District Office in downtown Portsmouth.
“My office found out about the picture when my local field representative, Stephen Caraway, contacted my Chief of Staff Barry Bennett and told him there was a girl here that took a really great photo,” Schmidt said. “Barry suggested we put it in my Washington office and I thought that was a wonderful idea.”

Shawnee State University students co-host ‘Christmas on 14th Street’

About 50 students from Shawnee State University Office of Community Service hosted “Christmas on 14th Street” with the 14th Street Community Center on Saturday, Dec. 13. The students adopted kindergarten through sixth grade children for the day, presenting a gift to each child.
An estimated 150 children visited the center throughout the day. SSU volunteers decorated a tree with the children and took them to different activity stations that the SSU AmeriCorps VISTAs, Sarah Lowe and Kelly Hatas, along with the interim director of the center, Christi Gambill, had planned. Activities included bingo, crafts, decorating sugar cookies along with various activities in the gymnasium and a lighting of the Christmas tree.
“Children kept coming throughout the day while we were doing activities and it was so busy we did not get a final count,” said Christi Gambill, interim executive director of the 14th Street Community Center. “We ran out of gifts at one point and had to go out and get more.”
The SSU students also prepared a meal of hot dogs, macaroni and cheese, green beans and fruit juice for the children.
“Many people made this wonderful event possible, from the university community to businesses to individuals,” Hatas said. “Everyone involved had a great time with the children.”
Union Mills Confectionary provided the cookies and Adam & Eve’s provided a holiday costume. Lynne Rodeheffer, Rita Haider, Barb Bradbury and employees from SSU’s Provost Office, Office of Human Resources and Clark Memorial Library donated holiday decorations and supplies to help with the event.

Shawnee State University participates in ‘Ohio Can’

Shawnee State University is participating in the “Ohio Can! Go to College” initiative, a statewide effort that focuses on reaching more students to potentially change their lives.
The program is organized by the University System of Ohio Chancellor Eric Fingerhut, sponsored by the Ohio Board of Regents, administered by the Ohio College Access network and partially funded by the Ohio legislature.
The focus of the ten-year plan is to raise scholarship dollars to allow an additional 230,000 students to attend colleges and universities throughout the state. SSU’s goal is to increase enrollment to 5,000 students in the next ten years by focusing on securing funds to support increased scholarship and internship opportunities for the students.
“Scholarships and internships are vital for continuing education of today’s young people,” said SSU’s President Rita Rice Morris. “Scholarships open doors of opportunity for a student’s future and internships allow students to become part of the local workforce and have hands-on experiences to help them prepare for life after college.”
The Ohio Board of Regents and Ohio College Access Network are encouraging private and public partnerships to leverage the state’s $8.5 million investment to raise $100 million by Dec. 31, 2009, which will allow up to 23,000 additional students to receive an affordable education. The program will also help create more than 500 new internships throughout the state while generating $3 million of income for college students.
Funding received through this project will strengthen SSU’s efforts to boost enrollment by increasing the availability of scholarships and internships. The goals for SSU during this two-year drive are to raise $700,000 in private support for scholarships and provide support for students during their internships.
“The support we receive from this initiative will be an investment in our students, empowering them to be the innovators, educators, and leaders of tomorrow, making this region a better place for all of us,” said Mandy Hart, associate director of Development for Major and Planned Gifts.

Shawnee State University celebrates Black History with films, entertainment and programs for three months

For three months, January through March at Shawnee State University, Matt Matthews’ Black History Month program begins with “Celebrating the Life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.”
The movie “King” will be shown at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 15 in the Flohr Lecture Hall at Clark Memorial Library followed by featured guest speaker Dr. Samuel H. Hancock, special assistant to the president for Diversity, University of Toledo. He is one of the leaders of the newly formed state organization, Ohio Chapter of Diversity Officers in Higher Education.
Hancock is also an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine and an international consultant specializing in Developing Cultural Competence, and he has held diversity training sessions for the past 20 years, training more than 1,500 people.
His topic is “Unfinished Business” discussing the primary initiative Dr. King was working on before his assassination.
“The primary objective of the presentation will be to challenge all of us, particularly our young people, to work toward finishing the work he started and to understand that despite our greatest intentions, resistance will come from within, which is where we least expect it,” Hancock said. “Another goal will be to try to show that Dr. King in his own words was primarily a Baptist preacher who had fears, frustrations and concerns just like the rest of us, but had the extraordinary ability to overcome his fears and was literally driven to do what was right – regardless of the cost.”
A video “The Nuns March on Selma” will be shown at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 22 in the Flohr Lecture Hall. The video is about Dr. King petitioning the clergy of different faiths to come to Alabama and protest in a non-violent way to lend their support for the civil rights movement. The nuns of the Catholic Church were one of the first religious groups to support the civil rights movement.
In February, the Black History Month theme is “The History of Black Music from the Gospel to Jazz and the Blues.” The music begins at noon on Friday, Feb. 6 in the University Center Main Floor when flutist Galen, a jazz musician from New York City performs and discusses the history of jazz in the black community. The Student Programming Board and Multicultural Student Affairs are sponsoring Galen.
The blues artist, Johnny Rawls from Purvis, Miss. will perform “Blues from the Delta to the World” at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20 in the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts. Rawls grew up with music and is considered a “soul” vocalist but when he started in music, he was an aspiring bluesman.
Ending the month, the AHANA Student Club is having a Gospel Festival at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 27 at the Flohr Lecture Hall.
In March, as an extension of the Black History Month program at Shawnee State University, the world-renowned African Children’s Choir will perform on Monday, March 16 for the general public. On Tuesday, March 17, they will perform a special noon performance for school children. All of the programs are free and open to the public.

Shawnee State University students get through finals week

Shawnee State University students made it through finals week for the semester from Dec. 15 to 19. During this time of year, some students are cooped up in their rooms stressing about finals.
“For my anatomy final, I just reviewed everything again the night before and the morning of exam after all that studying,” said Clay Dennewitz, of Londonderry, a pre-health sciences freshman at SSU.
The university shows its support by putting together a Free Late Night Finals Breakfast at 9 p.m. in the University Center for its students.
“The breakfast was nice because it gave us a time to all hang out and talk about our final exams’ schedules and focus on something other than studying,” said Casey Beck, of Tipp City, a freshman majoring in sports management.
SSU provides places, such as the Game Room in the University Center, to help students relax after studying too much. The facility includes three billiard tables, two Ping Pong tables, computers, game slots and a TV where students can bring their Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Wii or even watch a movie.
“Since I work in the Game Room, I don’t really use it as a place to hang out like most students, but I actually do the opposite and diligently study when students don’t need my help with something,” said Kimberly Covell, of Amanda, an SSU dental hygiene student.
Semesters begin and semesters end, and the SSU students have made it through another finals week.

Shawnee State University nursing instructor receives award in Ohio Magazine

Shawnee State University’s Catherine Bailey, senior nursing instructor, received the Excellence in Education Award in the Ohio Magazine announced in the December 2008 issue.
Each year, Ohio Magazine celebrates education and honors outstanding educators through their Excellence in Education recognition program.
Bailey’s name was submitted anonymously by a staff member or administrator from SSU who felt she was deserving of the award because of her achievements in and out of the classroom.
Bailey received a letter from the publisher of Ohio Magazine in August notifying her of the nomination for her contribution and dedication that ultimately led to her receiving the Excellence in Education award. She also had to submit a brief synopsis about her experience in education.
Bailey recently completed her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from Case Western Reserve University. She also obtained her license to become a Certified Nurse Educator after passing the National League for Nursing’s Academic Nurse Educator Certification Exam.
